Having finally read 'The Day of the Triffids' by John Wyndham, I endeavered to draw one, a plant grown for its oil, which just happens to be equipped with roots suitable to movement, a big stinger and a carnivorous disposition. The author is an unsung genius - he wrote about genetic modification and chemical/biological warfare in 1951! A damn good book I must say. The main urge to draw this fella is because the one on the front cover was laughable - it looked huggable. It was so round and fluffy and... CUTE! The triffid should look reasonably harmless, but still have all the bits in there - which I found surprisingly hard as there's little discription of the middle bit. It has all the essentials - funnel with slappy tentacle stinger thing, three sticks it uses to communicate and a big round blob with three 'feet' roots for walking and 'shaggy with root hairs.' It was surprisingly difficult to get on paper - This is the third attempt, oil pastel. He's waving his stinger at you. Please wave back or he will be sad and eat you. Well, he'll sting you first, guard your body for a few days, and when you're squishy enough he'll eat you one stinger-ful at a time. By the way, anyone reading John Wyndham is deeply cool. Chrysalids is my favourite, and The Kraken Wakes is rather good...

Awesome piece! I loved this book and always thought the time was right for another flick. You should try some other British sci-fi flicks, like X The Unknown, Quatermass and the Pit, The Abominable Snowman (Hammer) & Island of Terror. All are great! Again - very kewl piece! 2

1 Emma G. Absolon replies: "Thaks! Read any other John Wyndham's books? Definitely time for most of them to become movies. Especially Chrysalids, Kraken Wakes... Chocky would work as a play even - everything is in the mind. A remake of Midwich Cuckoos would be good too... Excellent stuff. And isn't it great the way cigarettes and brandy solve everything? ^_^ I haven't even seen the movie I'm afraid, though I'd love too. I'll definitely look out for the ones you mentioned, but I'm terribly detatched from the television most of the time! Love old horror movies though. Greatness."
