My objection to hippogryphs is not that they are trendy. Nor is it that they are hopelessly nonaerodynamic: an eaglehorse makes just as much sense as an eaglelion, after all. What bugs me is that they are so hard to make visually plausible. There's a lot of room for interpretation with your standard gryphon, really. Lion legs and torsos can be shortened or lengthened, slimmed down or decorated in ways that blend them with an aquiline foreportion. Eagle heads can be broadened and bulked up, and still look basically gryphonic.

A hippogryph doesn't allow that kind of leeway. It's an eaglehorse, nothing more or less. And you just can't distort a horse; if the proportions are a teensey bit off, it doesn't look equine any more. So all the distortion has to take place in the fore, to make the eagle legs work with the horse-legs, and AAIIIIEEEEE! Logistic nightmare. No wonder I'm obsessing.

I thought just about the same thing... until I saw the new Harry Potter movie.

Really! You will get a full idea of exactly how possible a hippogryph can be, and you will be amazed. I was surprised myself, and I think the trick is correct with the front limbs being longer and slimmer.

awesome picture, but if i may give you a pointer it would help i think. The front legs shoould be as long as the bak legs or it will have its butt sticking in the air.

I agree, I did several sketches of hippogryphs which managed to worm their way in a school art project, and they are NOT EASY. I just basically cheated and kept the proportions the same as a horse, since that's what I'm comfortable with.
Very nice job you've done here. I love all your fantasy animals...they all look like they could be real.
possibily because, in my mind, most things are.

good work!

I think Hippogryphs aren't as popular because they are actually a cross between a gryphon and a horse, which doesn't happen very often because gryphons and horses are mortal enemies. You've done a GREAT job portraying this offspring! I love it!

Very nice! I love the wings.
My own ideas on a hippogryph are basicly a horse with an eagle's head and feathery wings. I give mine four hooves insead of front claws... just my personal thing.
But yours is by far the best of the other type I've seen yet!

What I do is distort the horse slightly... It does so still look equine!!!!... and I slim and lengthen the front legs... You might lengthen the head slightly and add equine ears and a few feathers on the hindquarters. That really does work.

Just choose a horse breed with slightly shorter legs, or just make the eagle legs longer and slimmer. Or, even distort the horse half a bit. I mean, it’s its own creature, really, not a crossbreed (so I think anyway) so it wouldn’t look EXACTLY like a horse/eagle. Also, Though this is beautifully textured, the feathers do end a bit abruptly. Maybe bring them down the rump a bit?

I often sketch hippogryphs with lion front paws because they’re supposed to be gryphon/horse, not eagle/horse, so the lion bit always gets left out. It doesn’t help that JK Rowling described them as eagle/horse in HP&POA, but the clue is in the name really - hippo-gryph

But anyways, really amazing drawing. You’re really talented!
