I like your version with the forelegs added, since usually they are either winged deer or eagles with deer heads (both of which are nice as well). I'm curious if you're going to add the shadow underneath it?  The first peryton I saw was half-bird, half-deer, so that's the image that stuck with me, though I've seen both the versions you describe since. And the original image has the shadow in pencil, but it scanned so poorly that I erased it digitally. I agree that it does kinda detract from the full effect. | |
