'Joringel went away, and at last came to a strange village, where he kept sheep for a long time. He often walked round and round the castle, but not too near to it. At last he dreamt one night that he found a blood-red flower, in the middle of which was a beautiful large pearl, that he picked the flower and went with it to the castle, and that everything he touched with the flower was freed from enchantment. He also dreamt that by means of it he recovered his Jorinda. In the morning, when he awoke, he began to seek over hill and dale for such a flower. He sought until the ninth day, and then, early in the morning, he found the blood-red flower. In the middle of it there was a large dew-drop, as big as the finest pearl.' http://www.fln.vcu.edu/grimm/jorinde_e.html

This picture was made as a final project for my figure drawing class and was inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Jorinda and Joringel'. It is NOT an illustration for the story; you won't actually find this scene anywhere in it(at least not in any version I've read). I simply pulled various elements from the story and put them together for this picture. It changed a lot between my first plan and the final product, though. I originally intended to have the picture framed by a hanging vine of cages, for example, but I couldn't get them to look right. I was also considering leaving the bottom right corner blank instead of adding the cage, but it seemed too empty. My favorite parts of this piece are Jorinda's hair, her wings and the flower.

Charcoal.

I'll second the above. How DID you manage to be so evocative with the use of charcoal? Her wings almost define the visual idea of being "windswept." Not realism, as I usually prefer among those with wings, but entirely stunning. Her bodily anatomy doesn't have perfect polish, but that works well with her emotions, especially her ambivalence.

I'd like to share this with those in my Pteraphiles Yahoo! Group (see homepage at my library shelf) and invite you to come take a look, as well.

Whoa..
I'm speechless.
First of all, how can you DO that with charcoal?? How!?
I think this is my favorite picture so far... it's so melancholy and beautiful..
good job good job good job!

1 Vidya ´Sina´i Enantia´ Gopalakrishna replies: "thanks!! um, actually the charcoal was a requirement for the class i was taking. or i probably wouldn't have done it. though come to think of it, maybe i should more often. the two major pics i had from that class came out really good. of course, then i would need to buiy art paper again instead of drawing in my sketchbooks. i don't think charcoal works as well for small drawings. ^_^"

Yes, my favorite peices in this are the wings, the hair, and the bird cage. I like the bird cage because of the ribbon, I love the ribbon on top how it dances in the wind. Her hair is also very nice, I like the shading throughout the picture and the wings... I love wings... Black wings just make it better! ^_^

Wow- this is a great pic- especially amazing that it's done in charcoal! Love the wings and the hair- but the chin is bothering me. Just that it looks a little off, somehow. Anyway, again, great pic!
