This piece I drew quite a while back and it sat around for probably a year before I finally painted it this past August.  I think I half lost interest in the painting and half was just plain intimidated by the size.  Honestly, I'm glad I finally sucked it up and painted it because it was fun and I think it turned into a nice painting.

It wasn't particularly inspired by The Last Unicorn (though I'll readily admit the way I envision unicorns has most certainly been influenced by Peter Beagle's beautiful descriptions of the unicorn in that book) but was more inspired by the connections between narwhals and unicorn lore.  I just wanted to contrast the beautiful, magical quality of unicorns with their large, mundane cousins in the water.

I remember this from deviantart. I love the colours and the arc of motion in hte picture, from the swimming narwhals to the swooping birds, and the unicorn between them.

oooooooh, love it! one question though. It seems the narwhals don’t have eyes. is there a reason for that? or am I just not seeing them? just wondering.

:-) Lisa Eshkenazi replies: "The eyes are in that creased area. It’s just that at this size you can’t really see them. The real painting is so large that a lot of details were lost by shrinking it to a viewable size on the web. 2

Thanks for commenting. <3"

Very beautiful, and moving. Even at this size, the detail is still wonderful.

So many people make very beautiful things with watercolour, and you’re one of the best I’ve seen so far! I really want to learn this too!!! Can you give me some advice, how to start or make a tutorial or something? I mean if you can make this, what else do you want?? Awesome!!

:-) Lisa Eshkenazi replies: "I do have one very short tutorial on shading that can be found in my deviantart gallery: http://eshkenazi.deviantart.com

I taught myself watercolors mostly by looking at the work of other people and trying to create the same effects on my own. Often I would fail but sometimes I’d figure out a cool technique to keep for my own. If you want some tips on specific techniques, that’s definitely something better left for email or messenger because it’s not something I can boil down to a few sentences.

If you want some general advice:

1. Get good supplies. You don’t need the most expensive paper, paints or brushes out there but you’ll have a hard time learning if you get the cheapest supplies available because of the quality. Start with a moderate priced student grade and work up from there.

2. Patience. Painting with watercolors requires a sort of backwards way of thinking due to the transparent nature of the paint. It take a while to get the hang of this, especially if you’re used to other mediums. Also, don’t rush while you’re painting. If you take your time to really focus in on the details, even when it’s tedious, your paintings will look much better (I still struggle with not rushing myself).

3. And don’t give up. 12 Pretty obvious but I know it can be discouraging when you’re first learning. But all things take time. Six years ago I’d never picked up a paintbrush and my first watercolor painting was laughable. But I’ve come a long way so yeah. Just patience, practice and time.

Good luck!"

...wow... what an absolutely stunning beautiful picture you’ve created!!! the unicorn truly looks elegant and fragile and beautiful - just as the movie you were inspired from2! and i specially like the fact you’ve put narwhales in it - since it also reminds me of the beautiful song of america "in the sea" (i’ve also tried to draw that bits of the song with the narwhales, but not as beautifully as yours2!!! ). this is a truly enchanting, lovely picture - my congrats for your very well deserved star2!!!

:-) Lisa Eshkenazi replies: "Thank you! I’m actually thinking about creating a newer version of it, using some ideas I’ve had to go along with this concept. I think I can improve it a bit. 1

I actually was *not* inspired by the last unicorn movie though I was aware there was one scene of narwhals swimming through the waves. I wasn’t really attempting to recreate that style or a scene from the movie though it seems I unwittingly captured something that immediately makes fans think of it. I’m okay with that though. 10

Personally, I just love narwhals and unicorns and am intrigued by how they’re connected in lore and how people used to believe narwhal tusks were unicorn horns. I really like pairing together things that are on opposite ends of the spectrum. In this case, large, mundane water creatures with lithe, magical land creatures.

I hope the next one turns out much better than this. ^^"
