I have always been kind of an ancient history person and when I was doing some casual reading about ancient religions I came upon the story of the Amazons, or more principally what interested me, their supposed take on masculinity and femininity. Basically, that which is soft is motherly, nurturing, but ultimately weak and that which is hard is bent on destruction. Since they were (in myth) supposedly warriors of some skill, they seared off one of their breasts with a red-hot disc, thereby destroying what was in them that was motherly and nurturing and hoping to sacrifice by its destruction also their weakness to become great warriors. This captivated my intellectual portion. Most people I have noticed to draw Amazons using other parts of their brain (or body) so the uni-boob thing, no thanks, but that is what makes them so cool to begin with and, in the legends, so terrifying.

Anyway, this illustration is a sort of amalgamation of a lot of ideas that honestly do not make all that much sense together. The helm on the one furthest left is somewhere between Corinthian and Scythian; the other two wear rather non-descript poor-person type helms appropriate to most of that region; and to round it all off they’re mounted on horses, which was not a feat really recorded at all (due to the lack of iron to make shoes) until Alexander took his Macedonians (different people again) traipsing about Greece, the middle east, Egypt, and onto India. Basically, this is not a period piece of people who probably never exist in the first place, though it does look vaguely historic.

Thank you for depicting dark side of each of us (women) without adding Pamela-style look 4 It is nice to know someone is able to distinguish between warrior and sex symbol. Apart from that your mastery is something I admire.

Whoa. This is an amazing drawing. I love it. The horses are wonderful and the shading is also really nice. I like all the poses you've put your characters in. You're work is all great. Keep it up!

Don't mean to be picky, and I could be wrong, but isn't it Amazonians? Great work by the way, I'm loving all of it. Your knack for detail is amazing and yet very frustrating at the same time. I don't have the patience to work on so much detail. Well, keep up the good work!! I look forward to seeing more!

:-) Jonathan R. Brünner replies: "In an equally not wanting to be nitpicky sort of way, Amazons is correct. Amazonian is a word though, an adjective which means having the qualities of an Amazon or relating to the river."

You have an incredibly awesome gallery, and not to nitpick or anything, but amazons (supposedly) removed their left breast, not right, as you have depicted. Still a lovely pic tho. Awesome shading in all of yours

Beautiful picture!
About the uni-breast thing, I heard they cut it off to enable them to practice the archery that made them so famous. Their breasts got in the way when drawing their bows.

:-) Jonathan R. Brünner replies: "There is that, and I've defitely read that was well, but cutting off a breast for utilitarian purposes is less interesting than for such a sensible spiritual reason."

I agree. Cutting off a breast because you want to be ’ard just makes my spine go chilly. Makes them more than an excuse to draw scantily clad warrior women. Makes them WARRIORS who just happens to be women, or even more badass because of it.
