Given the weight of arms, armor, potentially barding, the lighter breeds lack both the endurance and strength to compete. They also lacked the strength for close combat. Arabians and other lighter breeds were archer horses, if used at all in warfare. The modern cavalry horse typically was a middle weight steed.
On the artistic side, the picture is render quite well. Reminds me of the "Savage Sword of Conan" magazine that was published by Marvel in the 80's and '90s. I don't know the time frame between the drawings, but this horse is not as well rendered as the previous Conan drawing, but is a much better choice of beast. | |
