From my books 'The Witchhunter Chronicles':

This picture is part of a series showing some of the different folks and races from my fantasy universe.
on the picture, you can see the original german name as used in the books.

Dark elves are the link between the elves and the orcs. that alone brings some problems already: elves think their tattooed relatives are too fierce, orcs consider them as too soft.
fact is, dark elves know a lot about magic and a lot about martial arts, and no other folk knows as much about curses as they do - which earned them a lot of respect but also a quite sombre reputation.
especially humans tend to fear everything that seems strange and unfamiliar, and because they also tend to hate what they fear, the dark elves suffered greatly from the witchhunters. after defeating the mares centuries ago, the dark elves had vowed never to go to war again, which came in handy for their tormentors, who killed many of them. but in the end, the remaining dark elves could jointly defeat the witchhunters for good.
still most folks mistrusted them somehow, and after those hard times, the grey-skinned elves got even more gloomy than before.
