Red sands run deep – Chapter 1

She felt a cold breeze creeping up her legs. Long way was behind her, long way was in front of her. She was holding old katana sword and was hugging it like it was a teddy bear. The sword was a beautiful and valuable blade in the past. Now its value lied in keeping her alive and saving her on multiple occasions. It was in black and red covers that were sprinkled with fine, yellow sand. Sword had many nicks, notches and cuts, but it was still sharp as hell itself. It could easily find its way through flesh and bones. Sword's name was Dweller, and her name was Ecatarina though she never used that name. On rare occasions when she introduced herself, when she made friends without shooting and killing, she would say to people to call her Ina.
Dweller had two younger brothers without names, two knifes that were in Ina's boots. Also, she had a pistol, old Colt. It may be old but it fired no matter what and sand didn't bother it. Ina had one more piece of luggage that was always with her. A spider in a plastic box simply named A. It was one of those new, mutated species that could endure for weeks, even months without water or food. Spider was usually black in color with some green stripes on its legs although sometimes it changed color into red and yellow. Ina couldn't notice this. It was a beast and Ina knew it would bit her the second it was free, releasing deadly poison into her. They were no allies.
But she had some common personality lines with him - they both didn't have any real friends, they were dangerous and full of endurance. So she kept him alive as a pet. Ina would make a pretty girl in a normal world that we know, but looks was something totally unimportant in Ina's world. She was dirty, smelly, she didn't have waxed eyebrows or legs and she lost a few teeth.
Her body was scarred and she still had some old blood on her left arm from cutting down the enemy. She was wearing old and worn-out clothes and some military boots that she took from the dead body about two months ago. She was about 1, 7 m tall and her body was athletic, full of muscles. Her hair was black...maybe it was dark brown but it hasn't been washed for a month so you couldn't tell. She had dark eyes, full of hate. And her skin was totally destroyed by sun, it was dry and cracked in many places. Ina saw the world black and white, and I mean that literally. She couldn't tell you anything about colors because she was color blind. That was probably her only weakness. Ina didn't belong to any fraction nor was she one of those fanatics who do things only for faith and religion. She sat up. It was still early morning, you could still breathe. Soon, the whole area will be struck by sun and sandstorms filled with poison. Ina spent the night in some abandoned, small "ghost town". You could find whole bunch of them along the way, scattered like sand dunes. Ina didn't have any idea about history and who lived here before it was all wiped out. She didn't care. Soon she was up and about. She took few sips of water and then she put on her mask that covered nose and mouth. You must have one of these in Ina's world or your turn into one of those rage driven maniacs that are spreading like a plague. All people called them maddies. You had to be on a guard for poisonous storms, filled with gas that can turn you into maddie. Ina was traveling all the time, so she developed a kind of radar for that storms, she could predict when one was coming. And it was coming. She gathered her things and continued along her path. I forgot to tell you that poison doesn't affect all species. Some mutated (like Ina's spider), other stayed the same as before. Ina felt wind hitting her in her back, letting her know who is in charge. She didn't mind the bad weather, she was used to it. There weren't many things that could surprise Ina. From all this descriptions you could develop a thought that Ina is some kind of superhero but that is not the case. Ina was just one more human in line that survived all kinds of things. You have to be tough in this world or you just die. Simple as that. It is a sad thing that a catastrophe made human beings stronger. Humans were now on brink of extinction but they were strong as hell. She was stepping firmly and slowly towards her destination - Tower town. She had 2 chores there: To get more water and to kill 2 men. The economics in this world didn't exist. There is no monetary system. People traded things for things and the most valuable things were water, food, guns and ammo. Ammo was especially valuable since no one made it anymore, there were no factories. Surprisingly, electricity still existed, but only in well developed towns. And Tower town was one of them. It got its name by the tower (shocking!) that was in center of it. Tower was made from some kind metallic poles but when metal became valuable it was torn down by half. So Tower town now had only half of its original tower. Her body was drenched with sweat. The heat was back and soon a reddish mist surrounded her. The evil poison was on its path once again. Her sight was obstructed by strong winds that carried sand and red mist. Her pace was slowed down by soft sand which behaved like a person, holding her down and making her feet drag. Images and inserts form her childhood surfaced, as they did always on her journeys. Ina would grow up to be a very feminine girl, good at cooking and taking care of young ones or cleaning the house in some other reality. In this, she killed her first man with 11 and continued this dark count till this day. All guilt was drained from her, leaving only bitterness and anger. All grief ceased to exist, lost in some dark corners, eaten away by hunger. If you really looked in her eyes you could see that. She had the dull look which could chill your soul. Because of the storm she didn't hear the raiders closing in on her on their scudd.
(Scudd=kind of sand buggy composed of many old scrap cars, solar powered)
She felt cold and tingling sensation up her spine, waking her from her memories but it was too late. Ina turned around and saw two of raiders coming off from the scudd, and third one was preparing the machine gun to fire. In a way, sand storm kept her alive till now because they would shot her a long time ago, from the distance if it was a clear weather. Ina pulled out her gun and started firing. She hit one of them and he collapsed but was not fatally wounded. They were wearing armor. A wave of bullets started to fly around her like crazed bugs. She thrown herself behind a small sand dune, but it wasn't much of a cover. She could see one raider advancing towards her and other one recovering from hits of her bullets.
-What now, what now...- The words were rushing through her mind.
She pulled out one of her knifes. She had to wait for raider to get closer...
-Patience... no panic... no rush.- She told herself.
Now, she cold hear how raider cocked his gun and that was a sign for her to act. Like a lightning she sprouted up and thrown her dagger towards the surprised raider. He fired a reckless shot without targeting and hit her in the chest. They both fell on the ground at the same time, their red blood feeding the ever - thirsty sand.
Ina took out the other dagger, waiting for others to come closer. But chest pain was dragging away her attention and her consciousness was fading. The sight was becoming more and brighter until everything disappeared. First thing Ina felt was strong smell of vinegar or something like that. She felt it climbing through her nose, pinching her by the brain. She slowly opened her eyes and discovered that she was in a small room, lighten only by few candlesticks. Not far from her was an outline of some stranger that was holding that smelly rag near her nose. She tried to get up, pushing his hand aside, but the pain struck her. She scanned the room for her sword or knife, or any kind of weapon for that matter. But there was none.
-Be still, child.-
The voice calmed her down a little. It was a voice of an elderly man. Still, she didn't trust him, she didn't trust anyone.
-Where are my weapons? Who are you? - She asked calmly.
The silhouette moved and shadow revealed a small, wrinkled man. He was bold and had very distinct purple eyes but they were gray to daltonic Ina. He put away smelly rag and handled Ina a bottle of water. She looked at him with suspicion and he could feel that.
-I mean you no harm, child.-
-Where am I? - She muttered
-On a kublek about 10 km from where we found you.-
(Kublek= Farm that produces food. It is fortified and defended because of high value of food.)
-The raiders...-
-My sons got there just in time. They were on a route from Senios City when they saw raiders attacking you. They helped and brought you here.-
Ina was still suspicious but little more at ease.
-You were shot. I hope you don't mind, I cleaned the wound and took out bullets. Don't worry, I didn't watched your private parts. - Said elderly man with a hint of a disturbance in his voice. He was aware of what Ina could do to him, even without weapons.
-I don't mind... and I'm not shy.- Answered Ina coldly. -My weapons...-She continued.
-Yes, yes... They are in other room. We were fearful of your first reaction, so we put them away. I'll bring them to you now, if you want.-
-Yes, bring them.-
Elderly man exited the room. Ina saw a hint of sight from there, few men were standing in front of the door. She could hear them whispering. She threw a few more glances on the room that she was in. Parts of her clothes were thrown on chair, there was a closet with broken doors, shelves for keeping the guns (but no guns on them), and a small chair. Wood was dominant material. On the wall left of her were two windows. She could see it was nighttime. The bright stars occupied the sky. Few dark clouds were drifting peacefully like some kind of lonely travelers. There was no moon tonight, that strange piece of celestial picture that fascinated Ina the most. She heard clattering of metal. Door opened. There was that wrinkled man with her weapons.
-There you go. - He said while giving her the equipment with a forced smile on his face. Ina inspected the gear and got mad in a second.
-Where's my gun?-
-Gun...uhmmm... I...-
-You stole it?!-
-No, just... I'm... Wait just a sec...- He said and stormed out the room.
She could hear some angry voices but could not distinct the words. In a matter of minutes, man came back. He had sweaty forehead and his cheeks were red. He was looking at his feet.
-Look...I'm...I'm sorry but we didn't find a gun. My boys brought everything they could find in that storm.-
Ina was mad. That gun was worth a lot and it kind of grew to her heart. It was from her old lover and she took it when he died... that is, when she killed him. She warned him not to hit her twice.
-Man... damn it! - She yelled and old man quavered.
-I'm sorry...- He repeated, this time even more silent.
Ina didn't forgive him, she thought he stole it but then again she could do nothing about it. She was wounded and probably outnumbered.
-Why do you carry that thing with you?- Asked old man pointing to the spider, tying to divert her anger.
-He's my pet. - Ina answered.
-Pet...that's funny...- He said and then just stood in the silence for a few moments.
-Oh, my... I didn't tell you my name. - He finally started to talk. -I'm Terrence. – He walked to the Ina and gave her his hand.
-Ina. - She answered, shaking it. -I wonder... Why did your sons save me?-
-Well...- Terrence sat on the chair and pulled it closer to Ina -We don't like raiders, as you can imagine and also I taught them to help out strangers in trouble. It's unaccustomed that the raiders attacked you there. Usually they don't venture forth so far.-
-Yeah, I know.-
-Must be all those disturbances up north...-
-Possibly...-

On the other side of the world, in a tacky room full of remnant statues from some old, unknown civilizations, the important decisions were being made. Room was full of sages, dressed in robes of different colors and with different markings on them. They had some kind of runes, marking their position in the order. By the east wall was a throne with 3 chairs on it. One chair was positioned higher than other two. Near north and south walls were rows of orange columns, painted with many pictures, describing the legends of order. Noisy conversation filled the dark space, lighten with candles and torches. You could hear three taps on some sort of gong and the doors on the west side opened. A strong voice shouted, silencing others
-Brothers, stop your tongues and lower your heads. Our lords are entering the room.-
Soon after that about two dozens of guards armed with spears, guns and short swords entered. All of them were wearing white, all of them had long hairs tied in tails. Crowd made a path down the middle right to the throne. And then three lords entered in this dungeon-like room, their steps almost silent on the rock floor. First was wearing red robe, second black and the third green garment. You could sense the respect and dose of fear in the air and in silence that now ruled. The hooded trio proceeded to the throne, never looking anywhere else but straight forward. They took their positions and the meeting could start.
-My dear Brothers! Golden Throne has come to agreement. - Spoke the green one.
-We have decided that the time of Reconcile is upon us. As the threat is great, we are bound by laws of our order to save mankind once again by uniting. - Added the black one.
-We shall use all of our means for the cause. Does anyone want a word? - Said the red one that sat in the higher chair.
-My Lords, may I? - Came a voice from one of the balconies.
-Proceed. - The red Lord gave permission.
-My Lords, I plea you not to waste our resources on lost causes. Mankind will never unite. The Red Dawn is our nemesis since the beginnings, West March is closed military society that runs on it's own course, Raiders care only for them selves...- His voice became lower and more quiet as he was nervous for the words he is about to say.
-Almost all neutrals hate us, even our own people, our own cities would rise against us if they had a chance, if there weren’t so many soldiers. We will lose precious materials only to giant a handful of men.-
The man was now in doubt. If the Lords didn't see his words fit, he could be condemned to death right on the spot. A murmur came across crowd indicating that there were a lot that thought the same what this man said. The red Lord stood up.
-I hear your pleas and your worries. But the Golden Throne has spoken. None of you knows what danger await us. Even we don't know the whole perspective! The maddies would seem like harmless influenza when the times of Reconciliations are over. In the next few days messengers will be sent to all world fractions, to all big cities to gather as much allies as we can. Perhaps when world hears of our little secret, they will consider to be friends with the Order of Monitor.-
In silence, the hall has begun to empty. The rebellious man was not sanctioned. Lords knew many thought like him and didn't want to upset things more than they had to. Lords exchanged satisfied looks and waved for the guards to prepare their exit.

Ina was now on kublek for a couple of days. She met Terrence's sons. He had seven of them. Also, they had about dozen of other employees on the farm. And farm was formally under protection of West March, protection meaning that the farmers had to give a big share of food to the military. In practice, they had to protect themselves. There was abundance of work to be done around here; the soil was not fit for growth. So Ina, to earn her meals, instead of sword and gun, picked up pitchfork. She helped as much as she could with her wounds. At night, she caught herself thinking how she could settle in a place like this in a couple of decades. There was something soothing in growing things. Of course, it never crossed her mind to stay here now. It was out of the question. Her heart was too restless and she had a job to do. Besides, war was too close to this place. She wanted her own piece of earth in a corner where there is no other human for miles. Ina enjoyed lazy sun downs which extended blood-red colors across the desert sky, announcing another cold night. The sight of green rows of vegetables, colored by golden sun was beautiful. She loved to sit in the sunset on the porch, just watching green fields and listen to farm animals. What she disliked the most was common dinner, shared evening meal when questions were drawn from the deck of curiosity and directed to her. Ina hated to tell of her past, whether it was about good or bad memories. Farm was secured by guard dogs and kind of primitive sensor system which was powered by wind generator. Terrence's youngest son told Ina that they had several intrusions over the years, but that attacks were not frequent. Most of the raiders are poorly equipped and in lack of courage when faced with opponent of matching strength. The only ones who were able to run down the farm bastion was West March. Of course, their goal was not to rob or kill inhabitants of kublek - but to exploit them. Ina was now in her bed. They gave her a room in the attic. It was small and dusty but it gave her privacy and peace. She was lying on the hay bed, cleaning her sword. There was strong knock on the floor door.
-Yes? -
The old door opened, and a head of blond, bearded man came through. It was Joseph, one of Terrence's sons. He was about 35 years old, strong and big with firm look and workers hands. He was friendly, like all of them, it was probably in their family line. He had a well known smirk on his face, revealing that he was here on some kind of mission.
-Hello there, stranger. - He said with merry tone. -Am I intruding?-
-No, not relay. - Said Ina, uninterested.
Joseph squeezed in through the opening. Strong steps that he made walking towards Ina forced dust to fall from ceiling downstairs. He sat in front of her. She could see with corner of her eye his nervous squirming, trying to start the conversation. She decided to make it easy for him.
-What's wrong? What do you have to tell me?-
That got him going.
-Well, you know that gun of yours that we lost.-
-Yes.-
-My father thought you could use this.- He said an pulled out not so skillfully wrapped thing. It was in a brown paper, revealing the shape of the object.
Carefully, without looking at Joseph, she took the present. If you looked deep in her eyes, those cold ponds of emotionless, you cold see a spark of surprise in it when she saw the Desert Eagle shining in her hand.
-I can't take this... It's not mine.- She said after couple of seconds.
-No, it is... my father said to give it to you. I don't know... I think you remind him of Jocelyn, his only daughter that was killed during the skirmish between March and Raiders in Senios. I probably shouldn't tell you that but... Please, take the gun.-
Ina knew this was once in the lifetime gift. She wouldn't have this opportunity again. And this gun worth a lot.
-We only have one clip for it though. - Joseph added.
-No matter... I... I appreciate this. Tell your father I will thank him tomorrow.- Joseph nodded.
There was a moment of silence.
-It is nice here, isn't it? - Asked Joseph.
-Yes. It's... peaceful.-
-I can't tell you how much I am glad to be born here and that we managed to keep the farm.-
-Hope you won't run out of luck...-
They sat there in silence for some time, before Joseph left to his bed. Ina didn't mind his company, he was quiet and was not annoying her with endless questions.

In the dark room, a tormented face shone by candlelight was staring at some files. Face was full of wrinkles and skin was old and gray, which emitted pain and worries. Under tired yellow eyes there were two dark circles, like two great sand dunes, two sacks which contained and testified many hours of work, reading, lying and hiding the truth. This skinny, old man was unknown to the world almost like his project. They were both buried deep underground, with only about dozen people who knew about them. Until now. Old man was scribbling NOT READY on paper. His hands were shaking, but that was because of his old age. There was a faint buzzing sound of generators in the background.
-Father...- Said the melodic but monotone female voice which lacks the emotions. Father, are you sad?-
The old man rose his head and looked upon perfectly shaped girl. She was about 18 years old with blond hair, blue, almost transparently white eyes and skin so chalky it looked like it had never seen the sun. She wasn't tall, about 1, 65 cm and slim built. Her hands were tender, like she never worked or fought a day in her life. She looked like she didn't belong to this world. She was wearing blue jeans, boots and tight, pink shirt without sleeves. She was looking at the old guy, looking at him without emotions with just faint traces of curiosity in her eyes.
-No dear... I'm worried.- Answered old man.
-You shouldn't be. I'm ready. I've always been ready.-
-I...I don't know about that, Sarah.-
She was holding old key chain in the shape of Ankh and flipping it between her fingers.
-Father, I will make you proud. I will fulfill my mission for the order. I will do good.-
She moved her soft, bear feet across the room. She looked totally fragile, totally innocent, like she never witnessed evil in her life. She could enchant the whole world with those beautiful hips and elegant movements...never the less, she could wake your worst nightmare with just one gaze that would reveal her dark secrets. Old man put his trembling hands on her shoulders. He was full of love for Sarah. His daughter...
She knew the elevator was coming. No one could hear it, but she could. After a few moments, elevator doors opened and two men stepped out. One was about forty years old with strong, dark beard that hid his face. His brown eyes looked upon world with angry and firm gaze. He had strong forehead. His skin was scared, but they were old scars. He was tall, strong and uptight. He was wearing clean, new clothes. Other man was much younger, about twenty, with childish look. His skin was burned due to the often and long exposure to sunlight. He was slim, somewhat shorter than first man. His step was firm and decisive which indicated his strong will and devotion to his order. He was a soldier, as good as they come. His face revealed that he was of eastern origin, unusual for these parts and for Order of Monitor. Almost all of them were loyal to the Red Dawn.
His clothes were old and used up, made up from military materials and full of military gadgets. He had long, dark and shiny hair which was loose. He greeted Sarah with a wave.
-Good day, professor Noah. - Said the first man.
-It's not so good at all James. - answered professor Noah.
-Why are you so hard minded professor? We knew this day would come. You the best of all...-
-Yes, but I...- Professor paused.
-You broke the rules, you got attached...-
The second man was just standing still by the entrance to the elevator. Professor Noah ignored James. He was stroking Sarah's hair.
-My dear. Be careful. Don't be hasty, don't hold up the usage of violence if you are in danger. And...-
-Father. - She interrupted. -I know...-
-Yes...yes, I suppose you do.-
-Sarah, get ready, it's time.- Said James. -Professor, a word please.-
James and professor stood in the far corner of the room.
-I hope you understand this must be done. She is our best chance. The messenger returned from West March. He was without his right hand, I think that says it all. They are too confident to join with us, even when they learn of the perils that are ahead of us. We must show them our power, our superiority. This is direct order from Lords.-
Professor stud in silence. Of course he knew all this, these were right decisions. But Sarah was part of his life for so long, his loved one. No one saw her soft side but him. Sarah appeared, dressed and ready. Her head was covered with large hood, her hands hidden in gloves. She was dressed all in black with golden threads on edges of the clothes. If they are going to make impression, she had to look good.
-My child... you are so beautiful. Take care of yourself. - Said professor and then shouted to the man by the elevator door -You watch over her, you hear me Yensh? If something happens to her, you better not come back.-
Yensh gave a little smirk which gave away his proud thought.
-Who could harm us? Who could stand in our way?-
Sarah hug professor and in the next moment she was in elevator, without emotion, cold as ever, staring in blank spot.
-What is our first destination? - She asked while door closed.
-Senios City.- Answered Yensh.

A month and fifteen days passed by since Ina came to the farm. Her wounds healed rapidly and soon she will be on her way. The dawn crept across the dark sky, spreading its optimistic specter of light. Ina was sitting on the big, red rock in the yard, thinking about her future endeavors. She still had a former bargain to fulfill. She already packed all her belongings, ready to disappear like the bat in the dark night. She was thankful for all that Terrence and others from kublek gave her, for all their assistance, but warm feelings were not something important or close to her. Of course, she will thank them before leaving, but there will be no hugging or tears like in the old movies that we are used to. As the sun already burst and mighty yellow surrounded new morning, one of younger sons exited from house and started to prepare tools for the working day. He didn't notice her because he was deep in his everyday thoughts and fantasies about leaving and being his own man. She watched him, remembering her own days of peace, wishing it to come back again. He was standing by the barn door, doing something with rope when flame of red color broke around his head. No sound. Only painful sight of young man's split head and lifeless body falling down. It didn't take more than a second for Ina to realize that they were under attack. She hit the deck, like so many times, taking cover behind the same rock that she was sitting on. She heard another shot, buzzing like insect over her head. Wooden barn door took the hit. After that, stealth was broken and first loud shoots were fired upon guards.
-We are under atta...- Someone started to shout, but didn't finish.
If this was some high-action movie, this is the time where loud, fast metal music would kick in, electric guitar embracing every fiber of watchers body. Ina started to run towards the house, hoping for the best. No doubt the bullets were flying around her, but she didn't pay any attention to it. All that was in her mind now was Dweller and Desert Eagle and her danger sensor screaming...
House was in commotion, men running from place to place, shouting.
-...that are Raiders. - Ina heard in passing.
-No way, they couldn't come this close from...- Somebody answered.
She got up the stairs, opening the old trap door. There was her only treasure, tools of vengeance and fury, just waiting to share their painful intention, to deprive others from life. She picked up the gun, when danger sensor answered again. She looked around but didn't see any foreseeable danger. That was a mistake. A strange sound came to her ears, getting stronger in a few seconds.
And that was it. That was the last thing Ina remembered about this skirmish. She woke up almost two days afterwards, under the rubble of stones and wood, remains of the main house. What she didn't see was that a rocket from a hand rocket-launcher hit the floor under her, destroying almost whole house, and tossing her out on the other side where she ended up buried, and that probably saved her life. Her whole body hurt like hell, every movement was a painful wave. She had a broken arm, no doubt. After she got up, she dragged herself a few meters farther. She started to examine her body... nothing seemed seriously hurt other than arm. It was night time, all quiet, except sounds of crackling fires that still burned with small intensity, giving away low and mystic dark orange light on the destroyed farm. Ina looked around. All was destroyed, bodies lying, covered with desert insects that didn't want to miss this free feast. Attack was produced by raiders, because all values were taken, even some clothes. Food was also taken, and that which was not, was burned. Ina carefully stud up. World was swaying. She started to dig around where she woke up, searching for weapons. It took her a long time to find it, 'couse all was scattered. But in the end, she was satisfied, because she found everything, even A was there, unharmed in his box. While she was examining the rest of the farm, in search of something useful, she passed by Terrence's body. His eyes were opened, staring blank at the night sky. He was without an arm, half naked and full of dark blood which beckoned for insects.
-I'm sorry...I don't have time to bury you all. There are just too many bodies. You were good to me. A proof that there are still men with a good heart on this world. And you were killed by cowardly act...proving that no good deed is unpunished. But don't worry. Your deaths shall be revenged. -
She said those words in her mind. No point in telling it out loud when no one can hear it. She found a few bruised tomatoes and an orange. Not much, but its food. And soon afterwards she was again in the desert, pacing toward her destination - Tower town. In the past few weeks Tower town became somewhat of a military zone. Anger dwelt on every step and you had to watch what you said on the streets. The uprising of raiders, the talks about Maddies that are controlled by some mysterious being, the strange mission of the Order of Monitor and something ominous in the air, all had the effect of tension in the city. Tower town was an independent city with its own army and guards. Still, they employed mercenaries to help keep the order.
It took Ina two and a half months to come here. Tower town was once again in commotion, a chaos reborn. Ina walked the dusty, busy streets. All scum of the town was wiggling; thieves, psychopaths, drunks, false prophets, recruit officers, scam artists and others have resurfaced. Everybody knew the new great war was about to happen, the only question being who will fight who. Shouts splashed the streets like waves, shouts of prophets that state the coming of great evil that will bring our world to chaos.
-What's new? - Ina thought. -It's already sunk deep inside disorder.-
Tower town was composed mainly from low buildings with flat roofs, made from mud or concrete. Wood was only used for shacks or barns. Ina walked slowly to the gathered crowd in the center of the town, just below the tower. There, some kind of public speech was being made. A speech that crowd didn't appreciate much. Armed guards were posted around the speaker. You could see anger and disbelief in people’s eyes but you could also sense a trace of curiosity, the burning feeling that ignited heart of the mankind from the beginning. Mostly young people listened to the young girl in the black and gold. Ina noticed her distant and cold gaze, she could almost taste her emotionless. That intrigued her. She wasn't so much listening to her words but was watching her behavior and gestures. The girl was no different than other prophets, delivering the message of the end of the world, great dangers that will shroud all survivors and the plea for all to join with Order of Monitor. Warm wind was blowing, tangling girl’s hair and throwing it in her eyes. But she didn't react on that. She noticed her delicate skin with no scares from the sun or combat. Also she noticed a young man standing beside her that he was watching her, watching Ina. Ina couldn't tell what was the difference between the young man and the girl but there was some significant feature that parted them. Ina put on her hood, and continued down the road. She heard the shouts from the crowd getting louder, then came the warning shouts and soon all hell of violence broke out. She turned and saw the crowd attack the girl and her guards.
-Guess they could sense something wrong with her too. - Ina told herself.
In that moment a siren started to scream it's warning, announcing that another poison storm is heading this way. Ina entered the bar just as the blast doors started to close. Soon, crowd dispersed. The air was damp and dry inside the bar. Old fan was slowly rotating on the ceiling, watering the dullness and boredom with its irritating noise. Two men were sitting in the back corner, playing cards, travelers it seemed in need of rest and shelter. There was an old woman by the table next to them, half asleep with the bottle of water beside her head that was laid on the table. And there was some kid, about 9-10 years old in the opposite corner, pretending to carve some wood, but the little pest was actually a thief. Ina saw the way he looked at the old woman’s bottle and other possessions.
Bartender was strong and big man, middle aged. He was bold, with black mustaches, bloody eyes, strong eyebrows and tall forehead. His shoulders were like two bolder rocks, and by that and the construction of his arms and torso, Ina could tell he was a former soldier. He was sitting by the bar, reading something. He shouted without taking his eyes from book
-Put on your masks, if you have any... The storm is coming, this bar is not fully sealed.-
All of them with lazy and almost lifeless movements put on the masks. Ina came by the little kid thief and slowly, quietly told him
-Listen to me very carefully. If you try to steal any of my stuff I will tear your arms apart and push them down you throat, you get me kid??-
Child was frozen with fear. He was still young but well aware of dangers of this world and ruthlessness that ruled. He just nodded with his head very quickly, indicating that he understood. The words of his late grandfather passed through his head. He always told him that sometimes a man meets a weaker individual, sometimes he crosses path with stronger individual, but sometimes the best thing is just to stay put. Bartender got up and started to light up the room, since it was dark because of the closed doors. Ina sat by the bar on the tall stool. She was tired, thirsty and hungry... quite weary of this way of life. It seemed to her like she was in kind of a loop, always repeating the same situations.
Small, already used candles animated the room, giving its rich shadows and strange play of light and dark. Bartender got up the bar and asked Ina would she like something to drink or eat.
-Yes, I'll have a liter of water, and something to eat, whatever is fresh.-
-Sure thing miss.-
-Don't call me that. Also, I would like to make arrangements for purchase of some grater quantity of water...let's say... 60 liters.-
-60? That will cost you.- He said with the doubt in his voice.
-I know. When I return I'll have something to trade. In the meanwhile, take this as a deposit. - She said and put Desert Eagle on the table.
Bartender picked it up, feeling the warrior blood waking in him. You could see appreciation for the gun in his eyes.
-Nice. - He simply said, but his face said more.
-Don't get used to it. I'll come back for it. Now get me my food.-
Bartender left behind the back door without word, taking the gun with him. After a couple of minutes he returned, without Desert Eagle, but with liter of water and some kind of meat with some potatoes and three days old bread.
-There you go. Food is fresh...kind of... Well, it won't poison you.-
-Yeah...thanks a bunch!- Answered Ina with sarcasm.
She was hungry as well as thirsty but couldn't eat until storm passed over. Bar was quiet, except for low murmur that came from two men playing cards. You could hear noise outside, people shouting, those left stranded and without masks. Soon, first shots came that brought peace of death to newly formed maddies. Minute lay upon minute, forming an hour. All of them were quiet, all of them kept to them selves. Then a siren broke again, screaming through walls and announcing that the danger has passed.
-Damned wind! - Said bartender.
Ina was starving. She tore off her mask and dug into food without replying to the bartender. Food was cold and squishy but it tasted good to Ina. She felt her taste buds blossom under the wave of this animal meat, of its cold juices that streamed through her mouth. Hunger was often partner to Ina and she developed appetite for all kinds of things so cold meat was not so bad. Bartender continued his reading, some old pre-war book of forgotten author. He turned the pages slowly, his eyes fixed on words that intrigued him. Ina glanced at him, wondering how a warrior like him could grow to like the inn keeping job and reading yellow pages of a dusty novel. She wondered how long it would pass if she settled down till her angry blood start to boil again.
-What are you reading? - Asked Ina.
-I don't know. First pages were torn off. It's some kind of fantasy story about midgets, some kids traveling with a ring.-
-Sounds stupid.- Ina replied.
-I thought so too at the beginning. Now I can't stop reading it. It's quite intriguing.-
-Well, I'm off. See you later. Take care of my gun.-
Ina stood up and walked out of the bar, winking to the little thief that sat still and watched her with fear. As soon as she stepped out a scent of death followed by sore sight of lifeless bodies hit her. She almost tripped on one of them. City workers were removing the bodies, piling them up like logs on the wagon. Air was foul, full of remnants from the storm. Everyone was a little edgy after storms, particles that stayed behind effected the behavior but without long term effect. Ina made her way to the gun store across the street. She felt a strong grip on her shoulder. She turned around, with a cat-like speed, pushing the strangers hand aside, and trying to twist it, so he would be immobile. But stranger was as fast as she was and he broke free in a second, stepping back and indicating with his hand for her to stop.
-Wait! I don't mean you harm! I just want to talk! - He said.
He was young, he had a face of a boy. His hair was long, and he was obviously of eastern origin but he wore colors of Order of Monitor. Strange combination.
-Talk is cheap. I don't want to help you, no I don't have water or ammo to spear and no, you can not hire me.- Ina answered in her snappy tone.
-I don't want any of that. Well... maybe the first option was a bit correct. Just give me a minute... I'll make it worth to you.-
-Yeah? What do you offer?-
-What do you need?-
Ina smiled. She was amused with confidence of this strange, young man and the fact that he just asked her what she wants. Like commodities are the easiest things to find.
-Alright... I want ammo for Desert Eagle. Enough for ten clips. And some food. Fresh. Then I'll listen to you.-
-Deal. - Answered young man without hesitation.
Ina smiled again. All this was funny to her because she didn't believe him a bit.
-Fine. I have a job to do. Meet me in that inn behind me in half a hour.-
-OK. - Said young man. -By the way my name is Yensh.-
-Fine, Yenish. See you in a half a hour.-
-That's YENSH! - Shouted young man after Ina turned him her back and started walking.
She stepped in the darkened room that smelled like urine. She found herself in stinking gun paradise, surrounded with weapons of death. There was a guard by the door, a mercenary, sitting and playing some old, hand video game that was solar powered. He was strong and bulky, just the way a rental soldier should be. Also, he didn't seem to be very smart.
Two men were by the counter. One was cleaning the gun, other was counting the money. There was a bottle of some alcohol beverage between them, its throat pouring brownish liquid in the mouth of first and then the second man. Alcohol was very hard to come by these days, because water was so scarce to find. But if anyone could afford high prized items, it would be gun dealers. Both of them gave her an "evil eye" when she walked in. They didn't like females, and you could tell. Too much trouble with them. One man was older, with long, oily red hair. Other was bold and younger. Taller too.
-Well hello there gun gods. - Said Ina with unusually cheerful tone.
-Hey there, miss. - Said the red one.
Ina walked towards the counter.
-Nice shop you have here. - She paused -I would like to purchase a handgun.-
-It will cost you miss. Guns are not cheap.-
-Neither am I.- Answered Ina, indicating that she earned her wealth by selling her body, which was, of course, a lie. You could see a little spark in the red guy eyes.
-Um, could you show me how does that one work? - Asked Ina pointing to the revolver on the shelf.
-Sure, sure...come here.-
Ina came closer and leaned forward, across the counter, near the face of the red one.
-Well, you see dear, this side shoots out bullets...-
Before he could finish the sentence Ina coldly twisted his neck which produced crackling sound. No screaming. Then, with a sudden and fast movement which resembled the snake reflex Ina pulled out her sword and throw it at the guard that just barely got up. Now he had a blade in his neck, gargling for air. The other salesman turned around and started to look for ammo in panic. That gave Ina the time to pull out the sword from the guard, come across the counter and decapitate the man. A spray of bright red blood burst in the air, painting the walls and shelves.
Three dead in less then a minute.
Ina exited coldly, never touching the goods. She now stood in front of short, oval building that by looks reminded of medieval stone towers. It was some kind of city hall, a place where men who run the Tower town met. Two armed guards stood outside, by the gray, dusty wall. They were professional soldiers, not like the grunt that was in the gun shop. Both of them looked at Ina with anticipation. A calmed, elderly voice was heard from inside.
-Let her in.-
The air was cool and fresh inside. There were two men sitting by the stone table. One was overweight with long strings of red hair, small, dark eyes, and with strong forehead which was covered with drops of sweat. Other was much younger, also red haired, fit and strong, wearing armor and playing with a knife. His eyes lustfully followed Ina, devouring her movements. Room was scarcely furnished, with only two chairs, a table, one chest, one closet and ottoman. It was dark inside, only one torch burned in far corner.
-My dear, you had come, finally. We had started to worry that you gave up from the deal.-
Said the fat one.
-I had unsuspected troubles, Mastrodonus.-
-Oh... I hope you were not injured, beautiful. You waste your pretty body. Stay here, stay with me.- Said the younger one with the smirk on his face, trying to be seductive.
-I would rather eat poisonous snakes.-
-Such rage, such fury... I could use you here. As an employee.- Said Mastrodonus.
-Look... I had enough. I told you already, I work for no one. I have done the deed. Your brothers are dead. Now, pay up!-
-Now, now. Don't get me excited. You know I have a problem.- Said Mastrodonus, pointing to his heart. -You shall be fully paid. Son...-
The young man stood up, and went to the chest, which was hard to open and was covered with dust. Then he brought a sack of goods in front of Ina. She opened the bag and examined the goods. There were some gold garments, few pistols, two grenades, few blades and so on.
-OK...seems to be enough. I'm off...-
-You want another job...?-
But before Mastrodonus could finish his sentence, she was already out, not caring for his words. They were father and son and they ruled Tower town for quite some time now. Before that, city had a council, but serpent father and his offspring played them out and now they are rulers. Ina had done a few jobs in the past for them, not because she liked them but because they were wealthy and could pay well. Now she had a plan for the future. She was thinking about it for some time. It was time to give herself a break, to escape from this crazed world into her corner. She fantasized about north, about cold lands that are almost uninhabited and rarely hit by storms. Of course, when you are alone up there chance is greater that Death will visit you, tearing your limbs, or eating you away with hunger and cold. Also maddies attacks are more frequent there. But Ina decided to take a chance. She will go north. She entered the stinky bar. On the place where a little thief used to sit, there was Yensh now with his mystic look, sparing just a little grin with his thin lips. He had few bags with him which triggered Ina's imagination. Bartender followed her with his curious look, wondering what she is bringing to trade. What Ina didn't saw, but what she felt, was a strong grip of bartender's left hand on the shotgun handle below the bar.
-You came back.- He said.
-Well, I don't intend to leave you my gun.-
-I hope you brought something to trade.-
Ina put two grenades and few golden garments on the table. I believe this will do.
-M-55. Where did you get that?-
-Doesn't matter. You want it or not?-
-Well, I don't do warrior business anymore, but it's a good sell. I'll take it.-
He took one of the grenades in his hand, feeling it's weight while looking at it. -The water is in the back, two of my guys are guarding it.-
He took the goods from the table an went in the back room. Few moments after, he was back with Ina's gun.
-It was pleasure doing business with you.- He said.
-I hope your water is fresh and well contained.-
-Sure is... I wouldn't dare to cheat on you.- He said with a hint of good will in his voice.
-OK!- Ina said loudly, clapping with her hands in the same moment. -Now you...- She added, while turning to the Yensh who was sitting still.
-As agreed...- He said, pointing to the bag on the floor.
Ina sat by the table, on the old, crackling chair, made of dry wood.
-You’re telling me that you have and will give me what I asked?-
-Yes. I am man of my word.-
-Just to be clear, you have ten clips for my gun and fresh food in that bag? And you managed to get that in such a short notice?-
-Yes.- Answered Yensh shortly.
Ina found herself surprised and irritated by this.
-Let me see.-
Yensh gave her the goods, without hesitating.
She took one glance in the bag and found out that oriental boy was telling the truth.
-OK, you got me interested. Who are you and what do you want?-
Yensh cleared his throat and leaned forward, indicating with his body movement that this speech was not for everybody.
-I know who you are. I know your abilities, I can sense it. We need your help.-
-Who?-
-Order of Monitor. But, to be more precise, I need your help. And my companion.-
-That...girl.-
-Yes. You saw her. You know that she is special. She may well be our salvation.-
-What is she?- Ina asked slowly.
-You will find out if you join us.- He said, staring straight into Ina's eyes, which she didn't like.
-Join you? I am a freelancer. I don't belong to any order, nor do I take commands from anybody.-
-Yes, but you do help sometimes. And you do work for payment.-
-If I feel like it. But now I have something more important on my mind.-
-Like what?-
Conversation was getting faster and more fierce, but still in silent tone. -Non of your business.-
-You don't understand. The world is in danger. But even our great sages don't know from what precisely. We are trying to unite mankind to defend itself.-
-Mankind will never unite. You are talking beyond fairytale. War is the only constant in this sick and nihilistic world. There is nothing left but hate and will to survive for nothing. We deserve to be extinct.-
-But what if even greater evil is coming? And if it will do even greater damage?-
-I don't believe in that gibberish.-
-You have to believe in something.-
-I believe in myself.-
-Do you?-
Ina paused. It's like he could feel her weak spots. Like he knew something of her past.
-Yes.- She finally answered.
-So you will not give us even benefit of a doubt?-
-No. I thought you wanted me for something else.-
Yensh was disappointed and it was obvious. He was full of hope for Ina and her help. Now that hope was dispersed like toxic storms.
-You know, we do have a common thing.- He said.
-Oh, yes?-
-Certainly. We are both fed up with this boring, lethargic world. With drained will and life without interest. Our race has a greater potential for a living, but none has a will to lead. To make a better surrounding. They all do so much to survive, no more - no less.-
He was totally right. Ina stood in silence for a moment. That was the reason why she was going up north. Not for better climate, nature or isolation. It was an escape from all this lack of will filled with hate, just like some kind of twisted chocolate candy.
-Maybe human race is on a place where it should be. Maybe we don't deserve better than to lie in our sins and bathe in this agony, this hellish purgatory before we find some kind of peace in death, and our bodies rot in these sands.-
-I wouldn't agree. I think this kind of life is forced on us. I believe that there were better times, when human life had value and tribes worked together to prosper.-
-You are daydreaming. Life is but a charade, a pointless act of trying...-
Ina stud up, even more determent to go north, to try to fill her soul with snow, to put out bitter fire in it. She took her things and made few steps towards the door.
-We will see each other again. I just know it.- Yensh murmured.
She didn't say anything. Her next stop was back yard of killed gun merchants, where a mule was tied. Beautiful black horse, with wild glare that just cried for travel. She made few noises, warning the approaching stranger that she doesn't trust anyone. Also she made a few nervous thumps with her sole. She took the horse, and loaded her with water and other supplies.
Together they made their way through waste desert towards north, past the maddies, a journey which was long as a year. Ina was in surprise because she didn't have almost any troubles along the way. She made a few contacts along the way with travelers and merchants who kept her informed about happenings in the world. The strange thing was that no sightings of maddies were reported in the last month. It was like all of them disappeared. Of course, that was a good thing for travelers and merchants, but Ina had a feeling that it was a sign of something bad that was about to happen. Also, armies and their generals weren’t too happy about it, because it meant less payment for them. Long, hot days melted into one. Ina almost lost track of time. Only thing telling her that she moved was sky and graduate change of climate. Sand grew thinner and slim vegetation started to crawl out from the dust. Not long passed when Ina saw the first tree, then a small forest and then a meadow. Her numbed senses started to twirl inside, waking the idea of beautiful and hope for some kind of peace in the north wastelands. She came across the last village on this side, a nameless dump with only a few wooden cottages. People here lived of the land, never caring about the wars of the others. Even the clans and alliances left them alone. Ina spent a few days, camping beside town center fire. There she learned a few things about growing stuff. Even though it was spring, nights were pretty cold and as the wind from the mountains came down, you could smell the snow cover in the air. She decided to build her own settlement not far from here. Forest surrounding the village was thick and composed mostly of pines and other evergreen trees. Nights were long and sunlight was scarce. Even sunrise was covered with some kind of filter made from gray colors. Also, all kinds of beasts dwelled in a nearby caves and mountains, regular and mutated species. This territory was often hit by the waves of maddies but the attacks ceased few months ago. About 20 kilometers east from the village Ina decided to test her fate. There was a small spring nearby – a source of value that was, as it seemed, undiscovered by others. It was hard at the beginning. She didn’t have enough food or the appropriate tools. She wasn’t used to this kind of weather and was cold all the time. First, she had to clear out the territory where she would build her home and plant food. After that, she killed off few beasts for food and fur. Life was hard but she had her peace all the time. No shootings, no fighting for water, no long traveling. Just the dark forest and her. The hardest part was to get seeds. She managed to trade for some potatoes, but others she had to steal. People from the village just didn’t trust her. They were all old, with many bad memories and even more superstition traditions – like not sharing the seeds with strangers. When the summer came, it was still cold. At least it was for Ina. She had built some kind of wooden shelter, a place without windows, only a door. At the first month of summer, she lost the horse. It probably died from cold and hunger. But the first plants started to point from the ground. Even in summers, ground was hard and weeds were trying to destroy the crops. But Ina managed. She worked hard, every day learning something new. As the months passed by, her new home improved. She even developed some kind of relationship with the nearby townsfolk. As for the news from the rest of the world, she didn’t care much. Never the less, she heard that things were getting hot. Tensions broke on all sides and all because the Order of Monitor and their strange representative – angel like girl and her young chaperon. As for the answers, she found some here. Her soul didn’t crave for the old days, didn’t want more blood. She found some kind of satisfaction in growing stuff and struggling for survival. She found the will for life. A year passed by, and then almost another. Even few days before the memorable event, air was filled with electricity and fear. Ina could feel it in her skin. It was like thousands of ants crawling on her. She was anticipating something, only she didn’t knew what it was. And then that night came… It was cold, but still. Sky was clear and no wind dared to blow. All the animals were silent, like they were in some kind of fear. Ina was sitting outside, on the wooden chair she made, covered up by furs, feeling the upset beat of her heart. Moon was full and brightly yellow, giving with his light a kind of mystic atmosphere. Ina couldn’t sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she heard violent voices, echoing in her mind. No, those were not voices of her victims, those were screams of the future. She felt fear, like when she was a child. She hated it. She was looking at that bright celestial object that shone over the forest. There was something about it… And then it began. Like fireflies, hundreds of them detached from the moon, creating fireworks effect, rushing on all sides. They were brightly yellow in color, leaving a trail behind them. Ina’s eyes widened. She stood up. After the chaotic start, all celestial fireflies took the same course. They were getting bigger and bigger. Sky was producing the dawn like effect, night vanished. Ina stood in silence, amazed as the fireflies stood on the sky. On the horizon, there were countless objects, moving slowly, like predator evaluating it’s pray. And then a bright green beam struck from them into the ground, producing a thump sound and flash. Soon, all of them produced that effect, rhythmically exchanging as some kind of choir, playing on earth surface. Ina knew that this was evil. She turned around and entered the house. She opened the old chest. In there lied her tools of death, her equipment from the not so old, warrior days. She knew who she had to find for answers. She knew all earth was in peril. And now, she had reason to fight for it.
