I had to read the Hobbit for school, and went into it with an open mind (cuz I like fantasy books). However, what I found was that it just wasn’t well written or thought out. I know the main point of the book was that Tolkien was basically inventing a new world (and that Elfwood sorta comes from his books . . .) but as literature, I really didn’t like it. I mean, what is the moral to the story? Thorin back stabs the Lake men in the back after they helped him, and then declares war on them. And also, throughout the book, there was one major element missing for me: love. And not even between a boy and girl, but just friendship in general. There was no emotional connection between the characters, and therefore no emotional connection for me. So that’s why I don’t like The Hobbit."

Angels and demons for example. I like this feeling behind those things. Tragic, despair, sorrow. The conflict between what they feel and normaly would have to do. I´m happy you can feel something of this in my artwork. Thats really important to me. (Sorry for my bad english. I´m from Germany and sometimes struggeling a little bit with english.) Genevieve M Fernandez replies: "Yeah! Germany! Awesome!!!!!! My mom’s from Germany, and her entire side of the family, so I LOVE GERMANY! : ) And your welcome. ; )"

The Dwarves are loyal to each other and their cause. But I think the Hobbit’s theme is more about change and providence (or luck). The characters have flaws (the dwarves are greedy, Bilbo is cowardly) but they change: Thorin apologizes on his deathbed, Bilbo becomes a hero. As to there being no emotional connection, Bilbo remains friends with the dwarves after he returns home. I read the Hobbit for school twice (this yr and 6th grade), and I enjoyed it both times. I’m sorry if I’m bugging you, but it really bums me out if someone hates a book. (Y’see, I’m a book addict. Especially for fantasy books ) It’s fine if you still don’t like the Hobbit, but I hope you can at least understand it a bit better Sorry for wasting comment space I hope you’ll put up some art or stories soon- I’d love to see them! <3 Genevieve M Fernandez replies: "Oh goodness gracious! You posted this comment a long time ago, I see, and unfortunately school has kept me from replying . . . to thee. Ha! I rhymed! Anyway, I’m back, and ready to argue again. Firstly, Bilbo being fond of things, and the dwarves having loyalty towards each-other is true, but still not the type of emotional connection I think is necessary in a book. I do get that the theme of the book is change, which is a good theme to have. And yes, the character are 3 dimensional, which is good. I do like Thorin apologizing on his deathbed. And I know he remains friends with them, but how could he not, after going through all that. Anyway, I do understand the book, I just don’t like it. Although I have decided to give the movies a try! I saw part of one of them, and it looked really interesting. Hopefully they have some girls in them. Which is another thing!!!! The Hobbit did not have a single female character in it!!!!!!!! That alone is enough for me to turn down a book. What type of world would it be if there were no women, right? And about the art or stories, I hope to put them up soon . . . if my scanner would stop screwing them up . . ."
