"A Dark Lord´s Rant (Poem)" by S. Kocurova

I've recently been writing poems based on the thoughts of stock fantasy characters (dragons, knights, damsels in distress) and I thought it rather sad that fantasy books always seem to be on the side of the good. So here are your average Dark Lord's thoughts on what he plans to do when he takes over the world (imagine one where people have all but given up the fight; 'ageing lords made small...'). It has a moral, too, but you'll have to read to the end!

To an age of fear and unreason
I shall bring knowledge; an enlightening
Make sense to be called ‘sense’, not ‘treason’
Give fact to all, a brightening
Of minds long clouded with the pall
Of legend, by myths ensnared
Leaving ageing lords made small
And dynasties unheired

I shall bring health to those knowing illness
Great wealth to those who are poor
My mind shall give will to the witless
And ease to those who endure
I shall build every spring to a fountain
Have forests to paper milled
Make streets from the stones of the mountain
For they are lands that cannot be tilled
When I level the earth to a garden
Quell the seas to restful pools
The meadows will have not my pardon
As the wilds are loved only by fools

I shall milk the world of its harvest
Rob from the viper its sting
I shall not rest till all is best,
Or as perfect as power can bring
Then at last will I crowded heavens prune
And across the sky place my mark
What need is there of the stars and moon
If my lamps can light the dark?
And hark!
(Since this is how the great have always spoken)
“My efficiency behold,
For what is Man that he cannot be broken
And remade to fit my mould.”

I love how this flows. Quite the view on how they think. A very interesting story I hope you do make on a proffesional level. You should enter this at poetry.com see if you could win 2 it's very good.

:-) S. Kocurova replies: "Oooooh! My first comment ever! Yay! And they said something nice! Even more yay! :drags finger from exclamation mark key, does a mad first comment conga all by herself and snuffles over to check out Jackie's page:Thanks for the recommendation...I meant to enter *something* at poetry.com, but not this, I think...I've read many of the winners and they seem to favour a different style (i.e. non-rhyming ;-) and I'm quite traditional with that...so now I'm going to go against my nature and cook up something else...:big smile:"

once again, I love it!
many people seem to miss the concept that 'evil' people probably don't consider themselves such... this is just lovely. you have quite a gift.

Evil? That wasn't evil. If so, then...I am evil! =)~ Seriously, you hit a point much overlooked, as the previous commenter has noted. Evil people don't typically consider themselves evil, which makes them all the more dangerous. I was told, once, that I was devious, and since I was ignorant to that fact, it made me diabolic. I shall have to contemplate that some more after reading this. Otherwise, good work. I don't typically like rhyming poems, but you gotta go what you are comfortable with! =)

:-) S. Kocurova replies: "Thanks! 16teff is much honoured to have a diabolic commenter: 1Seriously...I never really thought about it consciously, but I suppose that not being aware that what you are doing is wrong does make you more dangerous. Then again, I don't believe that people do things they *really* believe are wrong, so maybe everybody who is 'evil' doesn't really know it. I might be evil! (scary thought) I think I shall have to go away and contemplate some more too... On the subject of Sauron being evil, I think I beat David Brin to something for once. These poems were written mid 2002; his article was in December. So hah! http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2002/12/17/tolkien_brin/"

The title certainly grabbed my attention, and upon reading it I expected to see something silly - something along the lines of the "100 Things to Remember When I Become an Evil Overlord" list. But lo and behold, I discover fine poetry! I think it's something in your word choice and in your meter that I like particularly, as well as the fact that you're writing from, as you said, the point of view of someone from whom we don't often hear such things. This is great work and enjoyable to read. I'm glad you were our featured author/poet of the day!

This Dark Lord isn't just a stock fantasy character! He (or she I suppose)is suddenly a much deeper individual, with an actual personality now! This is really good stuff, nice and deep!

Also - it rhymes!!!!
