One reason people in pictures from the 1840's thru probably late 1850's looked rather grim was the slow speed of the film and lenses, it would take I believe, 15 to 30 seconds for a photo to be made and during that time the subject had to hold thier breath & not move to avoid any blurring, though with that slow a speed I would assume some *very* minor movement was possible without causing trouble... | |
