The Comma is a very common type of butterfly in England. I really like the shape of the orange-brown coloured wings and the little black marks. I read somewhere that comma butterflies almost disappeared from Britain in the 19th century, and by 1920 there were only two sightings. But eventually they survived and by the end of the 20th century hey had occupied Scotland and North Wales.

With this painting I wanted to represent the spirit of the butterfly in a human way. It was also a great chance to use red and orange.
