Matt Harpold

Matt is an illustrator located in Portland, Oregon, specializing in fantasy, surrealist, and visionary illustration.

I am a graduate of Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, with a degree in illustration....I have a foot in fantasy illustration, and a foot in editorial illustration work as well. I enjoy taking fantastical ideas and inserting them in a 'real world' illustration context. My influences are Dave McKean, Roger Dean, Holly Warburton, Rick Berry, Susan Boulet, Michael Parkes and Gary Kelley. I tend to work with anachronisms a lot, and I enjoy texture and painterly effects as opposed to tight rendering. Photoshop is my primary medium, though my work always stars out as a painting that I scan in and manipulate.

Yes, I do private comissions. Email me for details.

Inspirations and strange highways: these are artists who have a profound influnce on my work.
Rick Berry - A groundbreaking digital artist and a master of the human form. My personal favorite of all time.
Dave McKean - As multitalented an artist as you will ever find in fantastical art. Photoshop, painting, sculpture, comics, interactive media, music. What can't he do?
Odd Nerdrum - A highly disturbing and equally fascinating surrealist. A modern-day Rembrandt that wields truly chilling imagery.
Mark Ryden - Lush oil paintings of demented storybook landscapes. Rocket ships, little girls, and Grade A American beef. Ryden's work myst be seen to be believed.
Gil Bruvel - Bruvel's work is like falling into a vast toy chest. Very whimsical, and very French. Wonderful sense of style and color.

The McKean influence is very obvious. He's my favorite artist actually. You've managed to not infringe on his works though, and make your own style. You are an amazing artist.

Wow, that's one lovely style you've got there! I like the rough brushwork a lot, it gives the pictures certain spontanity. Since Keywork here mentioned Dave McKean, I can only second that - he's a brilliant artist, and inspiring too.
As is your work.
Kudos!
