This is an old Christmas card, which I made for a friend who fancies faeries. I got the idea of using bells for my motive from an original illustration for one of Dickens' tales, which I happened to read once in December, just when I was contemplating what to draw for a card to my friend. So I suppose I should acknowledge some inspiration for the idea, though obviously this card isn't intended as a Dickens illustration.

As of November the 30th 2005 (hopefully reaching my gallery just in time for Christmas) I have replaced the original Danish text, which read: ‘Glædelig jul’, with an English greeting more suitable to the international Elfwood context. By the same token, my horrible handwriting on the original card has been somewhat improved during the change. Elegant handwriting is, I confess, not one of my most remarkable talents, so I’m afraid it doesn’t get much better than this. Merry Christmas anyhow!

At first, when I wasn't really paying attention to the drawing but just reading the description I thought that the pixies or gnomes or whatever were sprigs of holly...they are very cute and carefree, good job. <}2

Oddly enough, I didn't think of holly at all when I made the card, but I can certainly see how you got the impression, now that you mention it. I'm glad that you like it!"

Very nice! Apparently it's not angels, but faeries that get their wings when you ring a bell

The faries make a nice substitute for holly and mistletoe.
They seem quite the handfull to control too.

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks! Yes, this is a lively bunch of little creatures, and if ever there was any mistletoe and holly to decorate those bells I suspect that it must have fallen off in the course of all this climbing and flitting about."

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks! If you are drawing something that you are a bit unfamiliar with, look for some pictures to use as references. It’s best to use a few different ones, so that you don’t just copy the picture. To get a good idea, just do some quick, doodly sketches, and never mind if they are pretty. When you have the final idea, do a neater pencil drawing and ink the linework only when you are happy with the result. Erase any pencil edges that may be left, and colour in. It’s easy! If you are afraid of ruining a picture when it gets to colouring it, scan it first, or take a photocopy."
