SciFi and Fantasy Art Owl Goddess by Ken Heronheart

This drawing was inspired by the story of Blodeuwedd, a Welsh Goddess who killed her husband in order to take a new lover. She was turned into an owl as punishment. Blodeuwedd means “flower-face”, a reference to the beauty and vitality which life brings to us.

The owl, as a night-dweller and flesh eater is a traditional symbol of Death. So here we have a Goddess who embodies the powers of both Life and Death.

This piece was done in a fairly straightforward pen and ink style with lettering added in Photoshop.

This picture is good but I love the text "I am life I kill All my lovers" It is so true.

The owl goddess does not kill her lover, she is not the symbol of death. she is in fact about seeing inward into the darkness where her lover protects her and she helps him see deeper

You might be interested in Alan Garner's book _The Owl Service_, based on the Blodeuwedd legend. It's generally classed with the dreck in the "Young Adult" section, but it's really quite interesting - not to mention well written.

She's Celtic, her name is just the old welsh word for "Flower Face."
