Shadows shifted in the moonlight, a dark form moving among
them. Gold eyes peered out into the night, their glowing color
disappearing as the creature blinked. Opening again to be gold
for only a moment before becoming an eerie green. Patiently
watching as headlights became visible in the distance.
Stepping slowly from the tree line as the jeep drew nearer.
The headlights flashed over the slender form of black. The
driver brought the vehicle to a halt just after passing the figure
standing on the side of the near deserted highway. With a
slight creak the jeep door swung open, the over head light
flickering on to give Alex a good look at who he’d just picked
up.
In the small light, quite bright in the dead of night, the young
woman was rather plain. She had thick black hair, soft red lips
that were drawn in nothing short of a serious expression.
"Where ya heading, sweets?" He glanced over at her. About
his age, not yet out of high school, her toned form dressed in
black jeans and a black tank top. Her green eyes flashed at
him as the overhead light turned off with the sound of the
door shutting. There was a click of the woman’s tongue as his
only response so he continued.
"I’m heading into town. Greenslie ya know. Just a few miles
down. You goin’ there?" He glanced over at her, seeing just
barely the outline of her form, staring straight ahead.
"Yes," She replied simply, her tone having a natural pitch to it.
Though soft as it was, it was clear and distinct.
"All right, any place you wanna be dropped off?" He asked,
slowing up as they entered city limits.
"Darion’s" She said, again her speech was short no more than
an answer but no explanation.
"Okay, where’s he live?"
"Here."
Alex looked over at her, confused. Her responses were not
only short but expressionless, as though she was merely
stating fact.
"What do you mean?"
"Darion lives here," Her first response longer than a single
word.
"What do you mean here? In Greenslie?"
"Yes."
"Well where in Greenslie does he live?"
"Here," She repeated no change at all in her voice.
"Look if you don’t know where he lives just say so!" Alex
exclaimed, growing frustrated as he often did with his
five-year-old sister running around.
"He lives here, Alex," She said, glancing over at him. Her face
was just barely visible, green eyes were sharp seeming to
watch his every movement. He was taken back slightly when
she used his name. He didn’t remember telling her it and she
was no one familiar to him. Yet there was a friendliness to the
way she said it. As if they had, long ago, known one another.
"You are welcome to stay with me until we find him," Ale
said, reaching over and turning on the radio."
~ Another mysterious disappearance has occurred in the quiet
city of Greenslie. Celsie Jarton, a senior at Greenslie East
never made it home after softball practice. Though the 24
hour wait for her return is not yet up the police say it will be
yet another name added to the list of already four high school
girls abducted in the last few weeks. ~
Alex changed the station as the radio announcer finished her
report.
"He is here," the young woman repeated with a touch of
finality this time.
"You mean Darion is the man abducting those girls?" Alex
asked, shocked. Police had been stumped for weeks as to
who it was. Trying to solve the case as one after another, girls
were disappearing all around Greenslie. Rumor had it they
were about to call in the FBI. Now he picks up a hitchhiker
from just miles from Greenslie, who tells him this Darion
fellow is the kidnapper of these high school girls.
"Yes," She replied.
"But why?" Alex asked again, curiosity evident in his voice.
"He’s looking for me."
