Tag As FavoriteComment		One of my rare attempts at a charcoal drawing.  As usual, I basically just made a big smudgy mess.  How on earth does anyone control their tone and shading with charcoal?  It's hard enough for me not to draw dark dark dark when using pencil... charcoal in my hands will blacken the entire page if I'm not careful.

You call this a smudgy mess?? Well if so, then I love your smudy messes! You seem to have done just fine in controlling your shading and skin tones, to me, but hey- what do I know?
For some reason I kind of like how her breasts are off proportion- makes her seem more real. All of your angels are so beautiful! And I love her wings- and the halo is a nice touch. 12

1 Ian Paul Houston replies: "The uh... proportions... sort of threw me off, when I first drew it... but believe it or not, the model for this piece really is shaped like that. Even still, I liked her look a lot, and I fell in love with the idea of an angel having flaws, just like the rest of us."

Dayum... i wish I was shaped like that... the hotness astounds me lol.... wow did I really just say that about a drawing?... i am so in need of a life... anyway... you so called "smudgy mess" is damn near a masterpiece... the shading is great and her pose is alluring.... YAY!

13 Ian Paul Houston replies: "Wow, thanks for the comment!You'll be happy to know I'm currently working on another charcoal piece that is turning out wonderfully... it has been many moons in creation... it's about 7 feet tall and 8 feet wide! I'll have to figure out a way to get an image of it on my computer, so I can post it here."

yeeaah charcoal is an ass! 10 i use it all the time at college, and although you say you had trouble, this looks very clean to me. do you use a putty rubber, they are very useful!? i alwasy find that resting the drawing hand on a covering piece of paper keeps it away from the drawing, but it still snudges slightly. 8 not perfect, but it may help?
i love the tonal shaidng on this one, especially her breasts and shoulders. i love how light works on the upper torso, it’s so much fun to depict. 2
