My half of an art trade with Leonie van de Poppe. She is a sea elf pirate who is Captain of the ship, Black Rose. If you want more info on her, go to Leonie's site. I have to say that this art trade was tons and tons of fun, and I couldn't stop drawing her. The only difference is that she isn't wearing her captain hat, because I couldn't draw it, so I had to improvise a little. Took 17 hours in black ink and colored pencils on vellum finish bristol board. Enjoy!

I love the blue skin. Nice shading, too; colored pencils and I don't get along this well. 2

1 Kristin Lewis replies: "Lol! Thank you! I remember the first couple times I used colored pencils. I thought it was a waste of money because I did such a bad job. It just takes practice."

I loke your choice of colors here they work together well but I'm seeing a similar problem with anatomy happening here too. Her hand is way too tiny and her legs are practically the thickness of 1 leg.

Before inking or coloring a piece I usually like to try to find some reference art from an artist I admire with a style similar to the one I'm hoping to achieve. Looking at the piece carefully you can learn how the individual parts work and why. Sometimes its even good to examine pieces you don't like to berrer learn how to avoid the mistakes they made.

Many times I find that characters I try to design continuously turn out terrible until I find that perfect image to reference that helps me work out the mistakes I keep falling into. ^_~

Your doing great so far though... much batter than many so please keep practicing!

62 Kristin Lewis replies: "Choosing the right colors is always the best part of creating the picture, as well as the coloring itself. Before I say anything else, I do want to thank you for your constructive criticism. The hand appears small because it isn't resting on her hips, but on her lower back. I used myself as a reference for this because I often find that I have a habit of placing my hands in the same position. As for the legs: you, as the viewer, would probably not see this because I had to crop some of the picture, but her legs are not placed together, but rather one leg is in front of the other as if she is taking a step. Yes, my anatomy isn't perfect, and I do have a lot of improvement. I often use myself as a reference as well as others, but I get satisfaction when I can create something from my mind, and my mind alone. Again, I thank you for your constructive criticism. I don't disagree, neither am I bashing you for your opinions. I am sure you meant them for my best interest. It can be frustrating when I am looked down upon as an art inferior, just because I don't have a degree. Many other artists have thrived after being self-taught. I am sure you can understand, because I know at one point, you were not a professional yourself."

Gasp! Is that a little child grabbing her hip?! XD Just kidding. Anyways the hand is really small, but otherwise really good picture.

6 Kristin Lewis replies: "Actually her hand is placed on her lower back, so the palm of her hand is resting behind her hip and not on her hip, making it appear that her hand is smaller when it really isn't. I actually used myself as a reference to get it right because I rest my hand like that. Thanks for the comment, though! Glad you like my work."

Hello! I really like her hair, the colour, the flow, all of it. Good drawing. The fingers really are disproportionate though, no matter the positioning.

Thank you for your comment on my Ganymeia, too =D

2 Kristin Lewis replies: "Thanks. This is an older picture, and it's odd because it looked ok when I used the reference (maybe I have small fingers....hmm...) No worries, it's an old pic.... Anyways, thank you and your welcome! I love the colors myself. They were very fun to use."
