• I offer both a t-shirt and a tank top with this piece on them at the Autumnsphinx Giftshop
This picture depicts a unicorn-maiden pondering a bat. The style of this piece was influenced by Anime, but this work is unique in that respect because the mood of it is very somber (at least in my opinion), as opposed to my other Anime-style works. The linework is much more fluid, and I paid a great deal more attention to shading than in my other Anime work, however anime's influence is still evident in the proportions. I actually completed most of it by candle and oil-lamp light because our electricity went off for a while during a snowstorm. That was interesting...

A single horned creature almost universally makes an apprearance in world myth. Most are only familiar with its European incarnation, or with the sugary, playful unicorns that are so popular with young children. However, the unicorn's influence is much more profound than either stereotype suggests. Even in medieval times, the unicorn had many meanings. It was said that the creature could only be captured by luring it with a young female virgin, and when it rested its head in her lap, it was trapped with a gold harness. This led to an anology between the unicorn, Jesus, and Mary, with the unicorn representing Christ, and the maiden taking the role of Mary. Conversly, during the same time period, the unicorn was also associated with Satan, who could only be tamed with innocence (represented by the virgin). They were hunted in the Dark ages for their horns, called Alicorns, because they were believed to purify food and water, as well as cure any illness. However, many ended up settling for the horn of the narwhal instead. The unicorn also made an appearance in the Orient. The Chinese refer to it as a 'Ky-lin', and the Japanese as 'Kirin'. Their illustrations of the creature do not depict it as a horse-like being, but rather as something along the lines of a hybrid between a dragon and a lion with a single horn. A unicorn was said to appear to Confucius' mother before his birth, and was also present at his death. Generally speaking, the unicorn was given the traits of purity and innocence (although there are a few noteworthy exceptions!), which was the spirit in which I drew this one.

For some more information on unicorns, visit The History of the Unicorn. I would also recommend a book entitled The Unicorn written by Nancy Hathaway which details the history and mythology of the unicorn far better than I have! The medium is black ballpoint pen.

Once upon a time, before the big crash in April, this image actually received a moderator's choice.

This is adorable! I love how you give background information on the pieces you do, it really helps the viewer understand the picture in depth. I love the knot work you have as a border, truly amazing, and so intricate! Plus, you gotta love the bat, he's just too cute!

The border is beautiful! I love it!, it's so Art Nouveau-ish. It adds that touch of elegance.
The bat is the cutest! Awww!

I LOVE that little bat!! More of those please!^-^There are some small Asian-style bats in my "SerpentLady" piece, and once my ticket gets processed there will even be a BatLady also! (Look for "Rafinesque Awaiting Sleep" in the near future here or on my website!)

I am sorry, but the only thing I like about this one is the border, the bat, and your effort. The girl looks deformed and starved. I am sorry, but the bat looks cuter. Good detail on the border though. You are quite entitled to your opinions (and, my oh my do you have plenty of them!) and as I mentioned previously in another one of your comments, I am certainly not perfect. However, she is not human nor was she intended to be, and exagerration and modification of proportion has been a part of art since its inception.

This is very beautiful, as is all your work! I love your details and concepts! Lovely!

I don't think she looks starved even though she's very thin and she's obviously not human...She looks healthy and elegant imo. If you had given her more curves she would've lost that elegance(I don't understand why people gives their catwomen so large chests, cats are graceful creatures).
