This is a piece from my 2d Foundations class which I took my first semester of my freshman year of college. The assignment was to illustrate the Greek myth of Pandora. This figure is actually the central panel in a triptych, a unifying image of feminine Divinity to link the stories of Pandora and Eve. Personally, I liked this image the best, but perhaps one day I'll scan in the other sections.     I cannot determine which Goddess this happens to be though. She is definitely one with celestial associations, and She does not strike me as perpetually serene, in fact She comes across to me as quite raw and chaotic. A muse of poets and perhaps of madmen as well....Any ideas as to who She might be? The medium is india ink wash with pen and ink.

How about the goddess Nuit?

She reminds me a lot of Hecate, even though she is represented more as a divinity between Phersphone and Demeter instead of Pandora. I think it's the infinity symbol since Hecate has the ability to go between maid, woman, and crone. Again, this is just me, I do like this work a lot though. Another thought- If you look at the flower as a torch then you can really see how she would look like Hecate more. ^^

:-) Desiree J. Isphording replies: "Well, this Goddess wasn't actually intended to be Pandora. This image just occupies the center panel of a triptych while the other two panels that flank Her depict Pandora and Eve respectively."

Are there any Lotus-Goddess...??

:-) Desiree J. Isphording replies: "There are many Deities associated with the lotus in Egyptian mythology, but many of them are Gods rather than Goddesses (e.g. in one myth Re/Ra is born from a lotus which sprouted on the first small mound of earth in the infinite sea of Nun, and Nefertem is a God specifically associated with lotus). Hindu mythology also features plenty of Deities with lotus associations."

Nephthys is the lotus goddess, but i think this is Hathor, although She is the goddess of love and festivity She is also known to be those power mad strong minded women like Margaret Thatcher etc. so the strength is also relevant. She is very beautiful, do you have an inspiring artist?

I was going to say that she was some kind of Persephone-like goddess, but then it occurred to me that she was something like Artemis. Artemis was similar to a moon goddess, while her twin Apollo, was a sun. in your drawing, you can see both of these gods in her, night and day, moon and sun, but they are united in one female body. i love your artwork, and this piece is especially thought-provoking. thank you, you have inspired me to grace my art with more depth.

Lilith came to mind.. a much maligned and misunderstood creatrix. She has everything to do with Eve.

This is fantastic. I'm really into the facial expression. And the flower is a brilliant detail. It really brings the picture together. It's so symetrical, and I really dig it. Excellent!

I know its been many years since this was first presented, but She can only be The White Goddess of many names, as per Robert Graves. Raw, Chaotic, Muse of poets & madmen. Perfect bridge between Pandora and Eve. No other fits so well. Only those true to the eternal theme are true poets.
