A gruesome monster from real-world folklore, the Nuckelavee (there is only one) is a sadistically evil scottish sea-devil responsible for famine, disease, drought and epidemics of every sort. Invisible in the water, the Nuckelavee's true form was only revealed when it emerged onto land. This form is always described as being skinless, with bulging yellow veins and pulsating red muscles clearly visible beneath a thin film of slime.

It is occassionally said to be a horse, occassionally a humanoid, and sometimes the latter riding the former, but in the majority of stories the Nuckelavee is both in one, with the rider literally growing from the back of its mount. The rider's head is always described as being exactly ten times the size of a normal human's, with an incredibly wide, toothy mouth and giant arms reaching all the way to the ground. The horse usually has only one eye, and an abnormally huge mouth. Both heads breathe a thick black poison, and when sufficiently angered the monster spreads a contagious and extremely lethal disease known as 'Mortasheen'.

Nuckelavee is extremely powerful, and despises all mankind. It is only kept in check by its terrible fear of fresh water, including rainwater.

I love it, I simply love it. A great interpretation on a creature that I have seen before. Very demented and grotesque. Its great.

Didn't there use to be a Monsters in my Pocket of this fellow? I think I had one, neon pink. Those were the world's coolest toys. I had somewhere in the area of 200 of the miniscule rubber fellows.

:-) Jonathan Franz replies: "As a matter of fact I have a neon pink one myself. I had to get him off of ebay just a year or so ago, because when series II was supposed to come out I looked absolutely everywhere for them and never saw a sign of them. I still don't know why they seemingly weren't released in my state. There were several available on ebay but I chose to bid on the pinkish, being the closest available color to bloody skinlessness."

They've got one of these in the game The Bard's Tale, except it looks kinda like an undead centaur.

These things are awsome. I put them at the top of my favorite mythical creatures list, right after dragons of course.

Yes, there is a monster in my pocket of this guy. thats how I came to this image. I was making a known list of monsters as well as checking out the dictionary definitions, some legends... what can I say im bored on thanksgiving at work. I was using the "monsters in my pocket" as a jump point for my research.... pretty good depiction...... I like it

"SCARY! OMG! LET GO OF MY HAIR! HELP! HE’S DRAGGING ME INTO THE WATER!"
Nuckelavees commonly rushed up onto a seashore to grab unwary wanderers by the hair. The monster would then drag the victim into the water while others looked on helplessy as their comrade was dragged to their death by a creature of death itself.
