James Carl McKnight

   My name is James Carl McKnight and I draw Dark Fantasy. I also have a fondness for horror and science fiction as well. I've been drawing my whole life, going back so far as when I could first hold a crayon in my hands and scribble all over my parent's walls. Later I graduated to an unhealthy interest in comic books, and that is where I really taught myself to draw. Berni Wrightson, Barry Windsor Smith and Frank Frazetta were HUGE influences. My teen years saw me drawing increasingly dark subject matter, mostly things connected with heavy metal music, but still in the total realm of fantasy. I loved(and still love) the fantasy authors J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Lin Carter, A. Merritt  -they inspired me! Now I'm older, and after a ten year hiatus I have started drawing once again.

I made the leap to Photoshop CS2 and I'm never going back! I still draw a lot with my mechanical pencil, though, just to keep the digits limber!

I would like to use this space (since I really haven't been drawing or posting much lately) to say that I really like the new improved Elfwood. A great site got even better! Thanks Thomas and crew.

Recently I have been toying with the idea of doing a graphic novel. I have this software called Comic book Creator and I intend to use it.

I would also like to sing the praises of the genre of music known as Progressive (or, "Prog") Rock. Not the Trance/Dance stuff, but the stuff with the extended jams and multiple instruments. Classic bands like Yes, E.L.P., King Crimson plus many of the new breed like Spock's Beard, Discipline., The Flower Kings, etc. This variety of music is perfect for the creation of fantasy art. Many of the songs are extremely long and they have the ability to  take you on a magical journey as you listen! I get lost in the stuff when I create. THAT's my secret weapon. PROG!
