| 10 Jul 2004 | Dennis Drury | Loading...I think that her head is somewhat small, given the size of her body. Her shoulders are a bit too wide, and her neck is too straight and thick. Her hands are too small in relation to the rest of her, even though one is supposed to be behind her and so look smaller than it normally would. And her right arm is too thin when compared to her left arm, even though the left arm would look somewhat thicker given in that position. Then why do I comment here? Because you have captured her emotion so well, as she stares out to sea. That in itself is very difficult, and may be the single most important quality in a picture of any person -- catching her feelings and personality. But also: because you drew her face at an angle, and did it so well, when 98% of all Elfwood faces are either straight-on to the viewer or total profiles. Because you drew her in a difficult pose and did it beautifully. Because you can draw this person so very well (apparently without copying a model), when I am helpless unless I have a model to copy. Because you, lady, are an Artist, and not just someone who draws pictures, and you should be praised for that; and you don't have enough comments on this beautiful picture. Janeé A. Polino replies: "*clears throat* Thank you for the strong critique." | |

My only nit picks (heh) are the colors seem rather muted (gray wash on purpose?) and the digital (I believe) details done to her neck jewelry are a little distracting. They are too bright, seeming out-of-synch with the rest of the piece. Otherwise, this is a great picture. I can almost hear the ocean ^)^ Janeé A. Polino replies: "Thank you again. You are right about the Torque. I did use digital only to that piece. For a reason. The rest is done in graphite, charcoal, and then I used a smidge of oil pencil. No washes. The reasoning for digital touch to torque, was to draw out the piece of jewelry that I believe most represents her heritage. The heritage of Celts. I love their jewelry. But that can be remedied. The original is untouched with digital."

I wish I could do fabric folds that well. Janeé A. Polino replies: "Thank you, Brian.I actually enjoy working with the fabric folds, because they are fun to create. Doing eyes are tops."

Polino replies: "Thank you! In this, I didn't want to add any scenery, because I thought it would become too cluttered. I felt that, the viewers imagination could set the background for her. Gives one the feel as if they're in her stead."
