| 17 May 2004 | Flautist | Loading...Nice work, I like the red. BTW, as a flute player, I must comment that you have her holding it the wrong way. I see that you added the mouthpiece like on a traditional flute, yet you have her holding it on the wrong side of her head. Orchestral flutes are made to go on the right side of the body. If she were playing an actual flute, the buttons would be facing her and she would be unable to depress them to make music. That's really the only critical comment I would add. Jasmin Islam replies: "*applause* Well done! I was wondering when someone was going to notice that the flute is the wrong way around. I'm not sure why I drew it that way ... the picture just - came out - the wrong way around. This flautist won't have the problem with the buttons you mentioned, since I neglected to draw them (!)." | |
| 23 May 2004 | Nicole Rawding | Loading...hello. i am a real flute player as well. this character that you drew actually reminds me of this girl i go to school with... she's creepy. probably why a friend of mine gave me this link... anyway, there is no A in flute. so please, don't write Flautist. because, it's wrong. if you don't believe me, feel free to pick up "the flute book" by nancy toff, where she devotes a whole chapter to "is it flutist or flautist". lovely work. it reminds me of how i draw. =) Jasmin Islam replies: "That's right, there is no 'a' in 'flute'. However, there is an 'a' in flautist, n. A flute player. Also (chiefly U.S.) flutist. - the Concise Macquarie Dictionary (1982) So as far as I can see, both words are correct. Someone at your school resembles this picture? Woah ..." | |
| 24 May 2004 | Nicole Rawding | Loading...actually, there really is not an A in flute. it's due to the french people that an A was put into flute. i'm sorry that i can't directly quote anything like a friendly dictionary (which is not a musical know all end all) but i URGE YOU STRONGLY if you wish to continue debating this matter, to pick up THE FLUTE BOOK by NANCY TOFF and read the chapter entitled "is it flutist or flautist".
=)

| 29 Aug 2004 | Pedantic Me | Loading...This is (more or less) what I read in The Flute Book: Nathaniel Hawthorne was the first person to stick an 'a' in "flutist". This was in the mid-nineteenth century. Prior to that, the word "flautist" was derived from the old English verb "to flaut", meaning something along the lines of "to jeer, taunt, or mock someone" - often by playing a flute. So it would be etymologically correct, I suppose, to omit the 'a'. | |
| 21 Oct 2004 | Dave Cripps | Loading...Its a demon playing a flute. Thats what it is and that's what it looks like. And very disturbingly good at that. But why has it stopped playing? Has it wrought its evil magics and now pauses to watch the mayhem? | |
