"Barbarian Mom" by Jedediah Dougherty

She scares me in the way that a mother grizzly does...but she has an aurochs...

This is so cool, I realy like how strong she looks, but also how motherly too.

*^^* - just the concept that someone would even think, let alone imagine, the characters that you have conceived of . . . just boggles the mind. Especially since you have the blessed ability to convey these characters into actual, visual, constructs that we others can get our visual hands onto, and twist, turn, probe and devour with our eyes.
- talk about thinking outside of the "BOX" - its just freaking wonderful! (This is good!)

I've viewed your gallery several times and am always amazed at the breadth of work you have to present. I'm back again due to the Mods choice for "Barbarian Mom" and I have to say it's well deserved. Who in their "right" mind would even think of a Barbarian Mom carrying a baby in one arm and steering/driving a yak with her other arm on a mountain top in the snow, looking (and being) ready for serious action at any moment. I see power, shear self responsibility, absolutely no fear of being harmed by being attacked by man or beast. In short she's her own boss and she'll let you know so in a heartbeat. Who in their "right" mind? None - only someone in their "left" mind.

i feel sorry for that thing they are riding on. how can it cary such a heavy load? Still, really good!

The little girl... Something stikes me when I look at her: she reminds of Boo from Monster Inc. ...

The bridle and harness on the yak are beautiful, as are those horns

Jedediah Dougherty replies: "The yak harness is inspired by Tibetan decoration- they use a lot of bright red and green embroidery if I recall."

Yeah... why is she wearing underwear in the snow? HMMMM??

I have a serious question and I need an answer plz.... how did u do the snow? I always wanted to know because I’ve treid it and its crappy.
Anyway, I love this picture. the idea itself is wonderful

Jedediah Dougherty replies: "Well- it’s been a while since I painted this- I will try to remember:

It looks like I laid donw a light blue wash in the background and painted the figure on top of that in opaque colors. Then I painted in the lit areas of the snow with pure white paint. You can see an obvious example of this down in the lower right by the beast’s hoof.

Also, this image is helped along by a bit of a contrast tweak in Photoshop after I photographed it- the original is a bit bluer.

Wow. She could stare Conan the Barbarian down and make him crawl into a cave. Actually this could even be is mother.
She doesn’t look like she would need a man to protect her;and it looks like she would pass the self-reliant attitude on to her daughter as well. Although...wouldn’t yak hair itch the legs?
