SciFi and Fantasy Art Lang by Jedediah Dougherty

This is a pencil drawing colored with Photoshop.
This is another illustration for Darkloch, of Lang, a Human Ranger who has specialized as a Mist Treader (see below):

"The mist treader is a unique prestige class; its abilities are subtle and diverse, yet potent if applied in the right conditions. Eamonvale’s inhabitants are obliged to spend much of their lives under a blanket of drifting mist and rain. Anyone who endures these conditions for several months learns to accept and ignore the inconveniences they bring, but a few are able turn the valley’s troublesome weather to their advantage. These individuals learn to move through the mist unhindered, to use it for defense, for cover under missile fire and eventually manage to manipulate it through sheer force of will."

'If the woods and back roads are at their most inhospitable on a wet night, then the man known as Lang is all the more content to have them to himself. He is recognized as a competent tracker and woodsman, but it is his confidence and intuition in even the most deplorable visibility conditions that have brought him true renown. During the rainiest seasons, he can command any price from caravan masters for his guiding services.'

10 Apr 2003	Ralph A. Attanasia	Loading... Heyyyyy...first comment. I really like this piece. I like his hand and his nose a lot. The fog effects look great too. There are so many little things in this picture that I like that it would be impractical to put them all. Just generally impressed overall. Jedediah Dougherty replies: "Glad you like it! I actually had to go back and fudge in his footprints in the road after I thought I was done. Thanks to my girlfriend's sharp eye for catching that one."

25 Jan 2004	Anonymous	Loading... I can't put my finger on it exactly, but I'm completely enthralled by this picture. There is so much to be taken from this that I cannot describe it all properly. This is a fantastic piece.
7 Feb 2004	Christian 'Krys' Pouliot	Loading... This is great! The mist is so well done! This drawing gives a feeling of impending danger. The lighting of the caravan lamps reflecting on the water on the ground and the silhouetted tree... all details that add to your work! This is awesome!

This picture is actually not particularly good technically -- the character's proportions are all wrong, the computer-worked mist doesn't fit with the line drawing, etc. However, there is life in this picture -- the position of the character is awesome, it's realistic, if you look at it you can see the story behind it. The action is perfect. Not many pictures have that. Jedediah Dougherty replies: "Ouch! Well, thanks for noticing the good bits, and I'll have to work on that computer coloring."
