From what I can tell of your work here, your friend Rae did a lot of the drawing and you've done the coloring, so I'll keep my remarks on the coloring. First, since you've got all digital pieces here, I'd really like to see some real media. Not because I think digital coloring is evil, but because sometimes using real media forces you to think about things that you'd otherwise ignore, and it shows you've got flexibility as an artist. If you get clean inked linework, see if you can make a printed copy and try shading it just with pencil. Focus on values and contrasts. In your coloring I see a lot of "safe" lighting. Things are uniformly lit and there's no distinct light sources. Thinking about where the light is coming from and how strong the light is before you start coloring will add a lot of interest to your work. (In other words, try doing a pencil shade test so you can work out the lighting before you color.) I'd also suggest trying to color your next piece without using pure black and white. You've chosen lovely strong colors, but you'll add a lot more "pop" if you were to shade with colors, instead of white, black and grey. Some of your characters are in shiny pants - what if the shiny highlights were in pale blue or orange instead of plain white? Try using colors you wouldn't normally choose and you may surprise yourself. Also - a little tip for the copyright on your work - it generally goes "© (year) (artist name)", and then you can include your email/website address so that someone can get in touch with you. Best of luck with your future work. Jacqueline Lavache AKA Eilonnwy replies: "First of all...out of all 9 pictures currently in the gallery...Rae drew 2 (Puppy Love and Mine). The rest were all drawn and inked and coloured by me.
And I actually have drawn and shaded with pencil, none of which is shown here because my scanner does not scan all pencil pictures quite well. In fact there is a complete pencil version of "The Lost" that I gave to Rae.
As for shading, yes that's something I'm trying to perfect, thank you for the advice on that.
And I like my copyright stamp just the way it is. ^^"
| 4 Mar 2004 | Jennie Seay | Loading...Ah. You and your friend have similar styles (which makes sense if you're working on the same comic), so it's not completely obvious who did which drawing just by looking at the image. I'm reluctant to make specific comments in a gallery with collaborative art because it's annoying to get comments on something that applies to the other artist.
It's a shame you aren't able to get good scans of your pencil pieces. I have to mess with the settings in my scanner software when I scan, and then sometimes I adjust the scan further in photoshop to try to get a true representation of the original. Very rarely, if ever, can I scan something satisfactorily with the default settings. Definitely see if you have any manual settings in your scanner software you can fiddle with - particularly the brightness/contrast option. It might help.Actually, all the peices that are collabs between me and Rae SAY they are, which happen to be Mine and Pure Love. If it doesn't say Rae drew it, then Rae didn't, I did.
And yeah, sometimes I hate how you loose quality of a picture when scanned. Same goes for printing something I colloured in PS.
| 7 Mar 2004 | Jennie Seay | Loading...Some artists are less conscientious about mentioning their collaborations specifically. I've gotten burned leaving a comment on an image that seemed original, did not mention it was a collaboration, only to have the artist unhappy that I critiqued things her friend had done. I've no wish to upset people by commenting on the wrong thing, so as a personal rule I am very careful with galleries with collaborative work. I try to limit my comments to what I know the artist has done (coloring, in your case). Hope you understand. I think the loss of quality when printing/scanning is a common horror among artists. ;-) Jacqueline Lavache AKA Eilonnwy replies: "I understand. Personally I think that if you do a collaboration you MUST give credit to the other artist, otherwise it's almost as bad as stealing, and I hate art thieves! It's common courtesy, you know? But also, I was just letting you know that I do that so if you ever wanna comment on any peices and know who did what, now you know. ^_^(ACK! I accidentally put this comment in a previous post of yours by mistake! But I fixed it. ^.^)" | |

And for my sake, haev you ever thought about makin a char who isn't gay -_-;; Just a thought. Again good job. Jacqueline Lavache AKA Eilonnwy replies: "I have made a character that isn't gay. o.O And the post below this is irrelevant to my gallery. I'll be deleting it. If you have comments on current Avalon Pages leave them in the Avalon LJ."
