| This isn't my favorite poem, but it won $50. it's my femenist take on the generic faerie tale. |

Rescue
Sits in a tower
way up high,
Nothing to do
but sit and cry.
Dragons guard
only door,
Fire breath
of ancient lore
Waiting for her
prince to come,
His good looks
will strike her dumb.
Many will enter,
few will live,
Hot swift death,
dragons give.
Handsome knight
through battle slips,
Up the stairs
staggers and trips.
Faster now
almost there,
Gallant youth
with not a care.
Sudden halt
there she is,
Beautiful Princess
finally his.
Or so he thought. . .
Clever Princess
stares at prince,
His dull manner
makes her wince.
Perhaps my dream
was a lie,
Princess thought
with a sigh.
But with weak prince
Princess went,
His fight was over
his strength spent.
So mighty Princess
with a shout,
Shoved her so-called
true love out.
He faced the beast
sure to die,
no way to win
should he try.
And Princess stole
his noble steed,
And rode away
with great speed.
And as all stories end,
pain in the past,
She rode off towards the sun
free at last.
