The church had once been beautiful, stained glass windows had cast a radiant glow to the place and light had glistened off the altar. But no longer.
The pews now lay smashed and broken the windows that once stood so proud lay as shining points of light on the floor, a thousand stars in the darkness that had engulfed the place. The altar was discoloured, desecrated everything reaked of decay and dirt. Even the homeless who had once used the shell of the once holy place to shelter in had left, something just did not seem right about it. Something seemed unnatural.
Today, for the first time in several years footsteps once again echoed through the once proud hall. A figure walked with steady, even strides that spoke of purpose and direction. His visage was hidden beneath a hood lightened only as moonlight gleaned off two points of golden hair that escaped the shadowy confines. He was tall and broadshouldered, most of his form was hidden by a tattered brown coat that hung down to his feet which in turn was on a blemished white hoody and worn out jeans. He stopped infront of the altar and looked up, a window here was blocked off by rotted wooden boards. Without any prompting the boards toppled from the window and thudded onto the floor. As moonlight flooded in a new figure was visible this one both irridescent and indistinct at the same time. It was an old priest, knelt down in prayer before the altar just beside the tall one. After a time the priest looked up at the other man and sighed somewhat dramatically.
"I don't suppose there's any chance that 'Boo' will work will it?"
"No."
"Thought so..." The ghostly priest stood up and went through the actions of dusting himself off. "...I always wanted to be a ghost you know, when I was a child that is. Thought I'd jump out at people shout BOO and they'd all run screaming. Turned out a little bit different though. Why I rem..."
"You know why I'm here" The hooded figures voice was both deep and hollow, compassionate and menacing he looked down at the priest with his expression still hidden beneath the hood.
"Yes, and I also know why you think your here so I'll answer that first. It is true that hostilities have recommenced."
"What do they plan to do about it"
"Same as ever, retreat behind the gates and wait it out."
"And if it is not like the other times?"
"Then I shouldn't be the only one praying." The figure nodded curtly and turned away again started to walk inbetween shattered pews towards the doorway.
"Do you want to know the real reason your here?" At the priests words he stopped and his outline seemed to become more tense, like a animal waiting for an attack. The priest merely pointed towards his side, where his left fist was clenched around several bandages that covered his palm. As he pointed the tip of his finger left the circle of moonlight and disapeared eerily.
"That is the reason, what you try to hide behind bandages and anger and yet can never truly remove from yourself. That is the reason you came here and that is the reason you plan to try and find a way to fight."
There were a few more moments of tension then the figure started walking again.
"Your wrong old man." That's all he said as the great double doors opened before him as he strode out and into the cold city street.
