| 14 Jun 2001 | EDWARD torres torres | Loading...Hey, Justin, my fellow EN-Boarder... what did you use to make this map? I'm having a devil of a time scanning in my hand-drawns and then computer coloring them for my gameworld gazetteer... =( Drop me a hint line at my gallery or in e-mail? --Gotta get me some more rope-- =) Hello James, this is basically the same thing I emailed you, though I thought I would post it here for everyone's benefit. 1. First I drew the map in pencil and then scanned itin at 600dpi for high quality. Careful because this makes it a really big file, and things can get REALLY slow if your computer is not beefy enough to handle it and all the color you're going to lay down later in Photoshop. 300dpi is good too.
2. Next I open it up in PhotoShop, and start coloring.I usually start with the large areas of solid colors using the airbrush tool; I will also use the selections to get some sharp lines along the coastline. I do some shading for ravines and mountains and such. At this point it looks rather blocky and not allthat good.
3. Next I go in for the clean up and detail using a combo of the smudge tool (This is the key to getting the nice terrain blending effects), and more airbrush tool. When I use the smudge tool it's important that I choose the correct brush for it, I use a wide range of fuzzy brushes from large to small, the Wacom art pad really makes it easy because I can use different pressures in my smudges, so I can get an extreme smudge or a really light one.
4. Next I go in and add the locations of cities and write in their names with a nice font. Depending on the size of your map this can take you quite a bit of time. I think I worked on mine foraround 6-7 hours. | |
