||Folk story... it's a well-known legend of my country :) “I’ll tell you a story that happened one day. It was New Year Eve, in the middle of a huge forest. It snowed all day long. They were celebrating New Year and drinking some rum, but none of them was as happy as he should be. They were all thinking about the girlfriend they left behind. They missed their hugs, especially on this special day. - “Why aren’t we going back to our village? I want to hug my girlfriend, said one of the wood cutters.” - “Are you crazy Baptiste! We can’t get out of this forest. The road is covered by at least 2 m of snow.” - “Who said we were going to get out of there by walking! I only need a canoe and paddles.” - “Oh no! You mean, we’re gonna use the chasse-gallerie, aren’t you?…but it’s devilish!” - “Don’t worry about the devil! If we don’t drink and don’t swear, it will be ok.” After some minutes, a crew of 8 woodcutters were ready to leave using the chasse-gallerie. Baptiste who knew the magical word asked the others to repeat after him “ Satan, king of the demons, we promise to give you our soul if we’re not here before 6 o’clock and if we ever say the name of your master or touch the holy cross at the top of the churches only if you promise back to make this canoe fly.” And the canoe flew. And the woodcutters were back to their villages with their girlfriend. And they celebrated all night long; some celebrated a bit too much. The morning was coming so they went back to the canoe. Baptiste was so drunk after this night that they had to tie him and make sure he wasn’t going to swear. They were flying back when Baptiste untied himself, got up and said “ Why have you tied me! Good God!” It was to late for the woodcutters. The canoe was out of control and hit the top of a giant pine: the woodcutters felt out of the canoe, into a huge void. And to this day, the woodcutters haven’t been seen anymore. ”|
