SciFi and Fantasy Art Merman by Johanna Tamminen

The text in the background is a story that tells the origin of the greenish/greyish little stones on the shores of Iona's sacred island.
A mermaid was desperately in love with a saint who lived in that island, and she went to see him everyday. All he said to her was that she could only get a soul if she left the ocean.
She was desperate because she knew she could never do that. The stones on the shores of the island are said to be the tears she cried.

The painting itself doesn't relate the story besides the mer-creatureness, the creature in this picture is a MALE afterall, but the story did give me inspiration while painting it.

Drawn by Ulla Nissinen, inked and colored by me.
Mediums: indian ink, calligraphy-paper, watercolors.

1 Jun 2004	Varystwin	Loading... Beutiful. Absolutely beutiful. And v. desperate. The picture doesnt fit the story physicaly, you're absolutely right there, but the moods are perfectly matched. I can see how it would give you inspiration. Johanna Tamminen replies: "I really wanted to make it more than just a random merman sitting and looking away from the viewer, and was hoping that the story would kinda add more to it. Great to know it worked as planned. "
