Prologue

The sun slipped swiftly through on moving clouds, beaming on the Yoakk (Y; awk) village, bearing down on the backs of many men and women who made their lives in this seemly perfect grove. Day in, day out, everything was normal, peaceful, in a way lacking. However, nothing was perfect, they knew that, and they accepted the fact that there was something missing. The sun fell down to the horizon and the people began slowly migrate back into their homes, and an unnatural silence filled in behind them. A few buzzards cried in the distance at a newfound kill breaking the unsettling quietness that lay on the village. The sky darkened as night come on. Soon a wave of villagers came crashing into the village square. Dust flew up at their backs, as they crowed around their central statue, the monument to their founder. The monument of the founder was a tall, lean, longhaired man; at his side were a yak and the other a wondrous looking oak. Although no one ever knew whom he had once sided with, it was said that he found out that he was serving a black market Lord. Having not wanting anything to do with such a man, he had set out for a place to settle. Without a wife or child, just his yak, he found this grove with an oak at its edge. He figured that the game was plentiful and the weather perfect, that he would settle down there. His faithful yak who many said he rode during battle soon died. He became unhappy and left his home for a year in search of a wife. To his luck, he found an able-bodied woman around his youthful age, which was willing to live outside a normal society. Excited he returned with her to the grove, there after he used the oak for the frame of his new home. Built over the grave of his old companion the ground is said to be blessed and never give way, rot floorboards or become flooded. The house still stands as home to whoever the chief may be. This age-old story of the people passed through their minds as they gazed on top of the oak at a mad woman. She screamed wildly at the sky, few could even catch the most pronounced words. She held a wailing baby in her arms and then suddenly as the clouded night sky began to rumble she threw the child down to the crowd and turned back to the sky. As quickly as she had set her gaze at the clouds, a bolt of lighting struck her. The crowd gasped most fled back to their homes leaving the child at the base of the monument. Peeping out from their windows they saw in disbelief that the village statue, not so cleverly made out of wood, had caught fire. It burned fiercely, of course a chain was made from the well. But they were unable to stop the fire immediately, all they could do was contain it. But no one dared go for the child. From then on, she was considered an ill omen to the town, and well avoided. Afraid to let her die, they cared for her minimally. Every other day or so they would feed and clean her. They left her in a small single room cottage-like place at the west edge of the grove. The people figured after a while, that when she grew old enough they could exile her. Although some said that, she had done no harm and that, maybe they where being a bit too superstitious- the villagers eventually voted that opinion out. At age 15, she would be exiled to be the nearest town’s problem...
