Okay, me again, but I just looked at the pic again and noticed what look like wires coming from her neck and also the 'crown' looks like metal with rivets - so here's my new idea - it is the personification of how the mother earth had been broken and patched over the years, with technology forced into part of her being - why she looks so sad(there's also the stiching around her eyes that made me think of this).

So cool - I love how you get a feel of how she encompasses both the land and sea. And it does have a sad feeling about it, maybe mother earth looking upon how we've diseased nature?
