A second oil painting with the same technique a 'Gatekeeper', and a more detailed under-drawing. This was actually an idea I had about a year ago, that never fully coalesced in my head until now. I wanted to do something with foxes and koi, the inspiration being that the red fox has the same orange, black and white coloring as Koi. Putting them in shells, that inspiration came from Patrick Woodroffe, who created a wonderful hermit-elephant named Micky. I figured surely if there could be a hermit-elephant, how much easier would it be to fit a fox in the sea-shell? The women are some sort of aquatic life, not quite mermaids (no tails or fins) not quite hermit-people (they can easily leave their shells) but they seem to be able to fit inside shells that are too small for them. Mostly, I just like the comparison of color between the foxes and fish.

I like the way she has the fish markings too, so that everything in the picture is connected in some way to the other things.

1 Kathleen Hardy replies: "That was the reason I put the markings on the women as well, to connect them to the fish and foxes. Also, because some audiences have trouble dealing with frontal nudity, and some of the shows where I exhibit have young people attending, the markings allow me to have the figure in the pose I want without having to censor the work, not exhibit the work, or put a bathing suit on the figure (something that really annoys me). So it works out for everyone!"

This is really extraordinary! You seem to have a great imagination, it is not only creative and beautifully drawn but
simply fascinating!
The colours are great, this is something to be proud of!

That is so beautful! I love the concept of everything in this picture. It is true magic. Beautiful.
