Well, he sort of just... appeared on my paper. I didn't mean to draw him, honest! I never would have even dared to attempt it. Yet my pen started to draw out the lines of an old tough man on a silvery horse... He's not exactly how I see Gandalf, but it's close... I was just really pleased with the way Gandalfs robe turned out, especially since I'm LOUSY in drawing clothes...
*sigh*Pencil, spring 2002 (I have no idea when I did this...)

Gandalf: "Um, sorry to mention this, Shadowfax, but we are going to have to go back... I forgot the hobbit."

Shadowfax: *mumbles* "I asked you if you had remembered everything before we left... I suppose you want to visit the little wizards room as well now." *sigh*

Oh, I love the expression on Shadowfax's face. The pencil work is interesting and craftworthy (I make up words when I can't think of appropriate ones). Again the perspective is there.

:-) Katja Alakotila replies: "*completely and utterly flattered* Thank you!
*lol* Oh, and cool piece of story you put there.. Just the perfect feeling...
*bows deep* I truelly am flattered by your kind commenting."

Now THIS is great! The shading is perfect! You know, you're a sorceress yourself, Katja, to make this wonderful piece of art! I almost can see the wisdom radiates from old man's figure! Do you remember this: 'Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them?..'

:-) Katja Alakotila replies: "*a humble bow* Thank you, my friend.
And do I ever rememeber that part! G has such warm but strickt wisdom to him that I envy... i wish I had the insight as he does... But then again such wisdom comes from a great deal of responsibilities and harsh ordeals. But still... *s*
Thank you for you for your kind words. *summoning the next spell from within herself* ; D"

Great pic. I love Gandalf's face, and Shadowfax's for that matter. The folds in G's robes are good too. Shadowfax's face makes me think of one of Nick Park's creations (Wallace & Grommit etc.) Because of the expression you've managed to put in what would normally be a fairly expressionless face - I think it's the little bit at the corner of his mouth. Anyway, great job.

:-) Katja Alakotila replies: "By now you must have realized that I really appreciate your (ever so kind) comments. As I do this one. I myself see Shadowfax (so weird, I can't seem to get used to the english name since I've learned to know him as Hallavaharja) in this dabbling as like a wax face, faceless... no expression... But I'm so glad to hear that someone else sees life in him. *s*"

I love the horse. I'm a horse fanatic. He looks strong yet gentle. Gandolf is good also. I like his expression. Excellent once again!

:-) Katja Alakotila replies: "*bows* Thank you."

Now this is how I pictured Shadowfax!!

:-) Katja Alakotila replies: "*a deep bow* Thank you. Unfortunately personally I'm not very satisfied with the horsie... Shadowfax, in my mind, is something so much... greater, nobler... bigger... I imagine him as more like one of those huge magnificent working horses with those cute hair 'pom-poms' in their hocks... "

Gandalf: lets go left.

Shadowfax: Ohhhhh nooooooo we are going right this time, last time we went your way we ended up fighting a 3 headed dragon so we are GOING MY WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love it, but gandalf looks a little, evil (for the lack of a better word). but it's still great art. ::thumbs up::

3 Katja Alakotila replies: "I know!!! He DOES look a bit evil! But I was going for a grumpy and utterly unsatisfied look, so maybe I wasn't realy that far off... (Wishful thinking...? *LOL*)"

Nice job, it turned out really nice. I like the horse, his perplexed expression is cute, but he doesn't strike me as Shadowfax, I imagined looking more noble. Still, great picture. 2

:-) Katja Alakotila replies: "I completely agree on Shadowfax needing to be more noble. I tried, but couldn't do it. It's been ages since I've drawn horses, really. But Gandalfs cloak and face turned out so well that I decided to put this pic up, too. Glad you approve this dabbling anyways. : )"

I actually love the content of this pic. If I remember, Shadowfax is supposed to be the lord of all horses. I think it captures his attitude as if he was posing specifically to make himself look better. He is beautiful and he knows it. =) Gandalf of course is his regular self, a little grouchy. It seems like the artist is in the way of his journey and is about to club said artist with big staff. He has better things to do than stand around and be drawn.

18 Katja Alakotila replies: "*LOL* You caught my drift perfectly! Thank you!"
