The witche’s cat came across a beautiful golden fish, still alive and trapped in a pool on the shore. The cat took it back as a trophey to show the witch, who gew frightened at the nearly dead fish and told her companion to immediately take it back and release into the ocean. But although the cat was intelligent she was even more mischievous and began playing with the fish and as a result tore it up in shreds before it ever got to the water. The same evening a terrible storm started and would not cease the next day or the day after. The witch guessed at the cat’s disobedience and went to the sea, summoning the minor sea god whose favourite pet the golden fish actually was and who, being vexed at its demise, unleashed the storm. They negotiated for a while and the witch appeased him by casting a magic spell on the cat and the tattered remains of the golden fish creating a new creature to replace the god’s lost favourite. Because the impatient deity tried to interfere with the witche’s magic the resulting creature also became intelligent and obtained some human characteristics and magical abilities... making it a bit of a surprise for both magic weavers... | |
