SciFi and Fantasy Art Sea Horse by Kerry S. Boyd

The hippocampus, or sea horse, is a seagoing mammal that lives mostly near shore in kelp beds or coral reefs. They eat vegetation such as kelp and turtle grass, supplemented with rock or coral for minerals. When attacked, they flee to either deeper water or shallower, depending on where they were assailed. If cornered, their forelimbs can deliver powerful blows (keeping their vulnerable fins closed) and can also bash enemies with their bony head crests. They are also migratory, and use strong ocean currents to help them travel between summer breeding and winter feeding territories. This is a male in breeding colors, as noted by his pinkish head crest. Females' turn a deep yellow-orange.
