The character is an alternate version of the demon Beelzebub, who regrets his rebellionb against God, and, because the appearances of angels and demons are determined by their mental states, he is slowly decaying and has flies and maggots eating him alive. (Believe it or not, this sounded perfectly logical and non-disgusting in my head.)
