A zalif is a member of the mulefa race from Philip Pullman's The Amber Spyglass. Those sections weren't my favourites, but they were interesting and innovative, and the mulefa are such an interesting race I had to try drawing one.

I love your interpretation! When I first read these books about 5 years back, I thought the Mulefa had only one wheel, and was so confused at to how that worked. After a while I just settled to seeing them as the lateral legs had the one wheel between them, and the front and back steered. Then someone showed me a picture (rudely drawn) and it had the two wheels. Ever since the ones I see are so similar to the one you drew. Thanks for reading my mind

I love this! I *like many others* couldn't picture how they mulefa looked. Its great. Now I can see how they look as I read the rest of the book. 1 Only thing is I thought they had like tusks or horns or something. Anyway its really good. Gratz!

Wow. I never thought of them being like that. I was trying to see them with the two middle feet, the front and back ones, as sharing one wheel. This makes it all much clearer. Thank-you.

Nice picture - I'm sure the wheel-pods are bigger though. About a yard across? By that token your zalif is about 2 metres tall, which I'm sure it shouldn't be. Small point I know.
I do like the picture though, hope you appreciate an attempt at constructive criticism. As has been mentioned, the detail to physiology is very impressive, I like how you've made it look convincingly like it could really exist.

I counld never really visualise what Mulefa were ment to look like, and your drawing has made the book make much more sense! Thanks =)
I could never work out how the wheels worked either, as I used to think the were spherical.
You've done a great job of interpretting the Mulefa!

Oooh. This is fairly similar to how I’ve always imagined them. I’ve never been brave enough to attempt drawing one though! I think you have inspired me to have a go at it! This is well done, I love the sense of motion to it. (Oh, and the mulefa are just about one of my FAVORITE parts in any book I’ve ever read! hehe. To each her own.)

This is ingenious! It’s the best depiction I could find on the internet. And I think you’re right about the wheels needing to be a little smaller than the author describes. Thank you =), and I’ll bet if you drew a few more and colored them you could sell them to the author, or publisher, or something.
