In Elizabeth Haydon's novel, "Prophecy", the heroine Rhapsody goes to a temple to find the Patriarch, the leader of the church.  They become friends and she promises to defend him while he performs an important ritual, alone in the temple at night.  She uses her flaming sword, the Daystar Clarion, to draw a circle of light around him and the altar.  During the ritual of intense prayer, two evil characters arrive at the temple to destroy the Patriarch for the sake of chaos.  One of them is the Rakshas.  Rhapsody has recently completed her training and now feels her mind clear as the danger approaches.  The Rakshas thows off his cloak and attacks with his black sword.  Rhapsody quickly draws the Daystar Clarion in defense... This picture is an attempt to illustrate this scene.  It is also my first completed attempt at painting in the computer.  Inspirations include Elizabeth Haydon, Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, and the George Lucas's Star Wars saga.

Wow...the lighting on this piece is masterful, well done!

Great interpretation of the scene! sends chills up and down my body. though there's one discrepency but it's minor. it's just that in the book she's green eyed with some variety of yellow hair 2 But I love the look in her eyes. and the daystar clarion.... masterful

That's very beautiful - I've read this book a while ago, and I think the scene is depicted marvellously. It has a determined and spooky atmosphere, not to mention very lifelike! I love the fire on Daystar Clarion!
