Centaur Skeletal Study 'Kentaurus Miribilis' One of the most attractive and powerful of the classical manbeasts, the centaur. This skeletal study was commissioned by Leucippus of Broceliande for the sixth edition of his pivotal work, 'On Centaurs'. Previous editions were sparsely illustrated with woodcuts, but for this tenth anniversary work, Leucippus took full advantage of the now widely available methods of printing halftones. Although the religious beliefs of the the centaurs of the time compelled them to burn corpses in order to release their souls for judgement and prevent them from being stolen by 'drujes' (demons), Leucippus was granted permission to dissect the body of a young male centaur who died of a sudden fever, a plague threatening the herds. The centaur elders hoped Leucippus would be able to determine the cause of the illness and develop a suitable treatment. Help came too late, but without their sacrifice our knowledge of centaur anatomy would be sadly lacking.

The strain could be quite a bit, so I'd have thought there could be some support from the shoulder of the horse body. One other thing that puzzles me is the fact that there appears to be no increase in the strength of the front legs to support the weight of the human body portion.

Looks like the exact image from a t-shirt... I don't recall the artist's name but the resemblance is uncanny, Of course that could be coincidence, so nice work.

I think the human torso, actually, weighs about the same as a horse's head and neck. So the front legs wouldnt need to be stronger...the balance would be different, though.

The pic its self is like, mind-boggling. How'd you get all those lil bones in there without going nuts? Beautiful anatomy.

Ooh hoo, that's pretty cool!

The weight of the horses head and of the human torso woudl be about the same, but there is a very thick ligament (the nuchal ligament) that supports the horses head. I think the centaur would have to have very well deveoloped abdominal and lumbar musculature to maintain that position.

wow. The angle of the humans spine look painful. The area where the spine bends in the wrong way hold a major part of the nerves and so on. It it were to snap, or dislocate, the centuar would die.

This is cool!

I'm curious about something... Centaurs reaolly have two sets of ribcages? Hmm, feel free to ignore me.
Anyway, good job!

If they've got two ribcages, then they've got two hearts, tyo livers, and all that? It would be interesting to know about, I was thinking about it for a long time.... hmmm...
Anyway, great piece of art, very well drawn! Keep it up!
