A.R. George loves the stories that hide even in really normal, 'boring' places, and the wonderfully comforting knowledge that it is absolutely impossible to ever -finish- writing. Oh, and elves. And cows. And potatoes. |

| 23 Jun 2008 | Jeff | No worries. You wouldn’t have guessed from that little git you saw. Well, NOW we’re actually arguing about cars, so if you want to see what I’m like when we really are discussing something... You might even want to weigh in, if that’s your thing. A.R. George replies: "Well, as silly coincidence would have it, I currently work for the crash investigation PD hereabouts - book keeper/database handler, not CSI stuff
I don’t really get online long enough to keep up a conversation with you guys, but I can give you a snapshot of my five cents as the discussion stands at the moment (keeping in mind this is from an Australian viewpoint of figures, and interpreted by an unranked keyboard-rattler at that):
- Although the figures for motorcycle accidents are severely skewed by your average hoon’s gravitation towards speeding motorcycles, bikes -are- exponentially more dangerous per capita than cars thanks to visibility issues, and in the event of a crash they are truly fokkered; extra manoeuvrability avails you very little against the forces of physics when travelling at the same speed as a significantly larger object, even assuming your reflexes are good enough within that couple of seconds.
- If you think ANY model car will keep you ’safe’ at any speeds over about 40kph (unless you’re talking ’yay, I’m eating through a straw instead of dead!’ safe), ~especially~ in a head-on smash, better think again There is also a fatal fallacy that driving a hulking great 4WD will keep your family safe, whereas it is in fact more likely to grind the other family into slightly gorier mush while you sustain pretty much the same fatal/crippling injuries."
| 23 Jun 2008 | Jeff | not here, on her page! Sorry, thought I might have to scroll back several pages to find out what you said if I commented there! I’m not saying that the car will keep you from ANY HARM. But severely injured is still much much better than dead, right? I hope never to test the theory, but my current feeling now is that I’d rather be dead than eating puree through a straw and having carers help me go potty for the rest of my life ... I’d find it hard to believe that the odds of surviving a front impact with a car at say, 50 mph are less in another car than in a mothorcycle. I’d be curious to compare the data. Oh, hell, no comparison. A motorcycle rider will almost invariably come out worse in a smash unless they miraculously land on a fluffy sheep while the car driver’s concertina’d in their sedan. I just noticed a previous comment about modern cars being ’built for safety’ and thought that worth mentioning ... You could probably look up the statistics in Aussieland. What’s the number of deaths / crash in cars vs. bikes. Reply on ’Ly’s page. you’re just what we need. a Statistician! You’ve got information/data we could use to reach a conclusion. Leave it with me - I’ll ask the guys at work and get back to you on C’s page. Though given how different the road conditions in Australia are as compared to the UK -or- US, Your Mileage May Vary | |
| 23 Jun 2008 | Jeff | ...And what’s a "hoon?" Ha. Whoops. ’Someone who speeds.’ Is that only us?
Man, you aussies have some crazy slang terms. *is having snaggers with dead horse for tea tonight, just to prove it*
...though I do love rugby and aussie football, on the rare occasion I can watch it. Provided you barrack for the blue and gold team, that does give you Awesome Points.

| 24 Jun 2008 | Jeff | Um...well, I’ll be honest I more follow European rugby becuase it doesn’t require that I get up at 3am to watch games, so I’m not really sure which team is blue and gold.
If you mean the Aussie national team...then I’d have to disappoint you. In international competitions I root first for the U.S., and when they inevitably lose I usually go for ireland or scotland, due to family heritage.
I can say I’ll root for austrailia on two occasions: when they play england and when the play france.
Though if you meant "a blue and gold team" and not "THE blue and gold team" the university club I play for (usually hooker / flanker on rare occasion) has colors maize and blue...and maize is a kind of yellow. Close enough for me, anyways.
| 24 Jun 2008 | A. Setliffe | my brain, imaginative as it is, fails utterly to conceive what a boring Liss would be like. yay for life’s chocolaty bits! I am ok. busy as all getout and trying to figure out how to finance my last semester of graduate school. I am training to be a librarian, of all things ^_~ I like it, but I am ready to be home and have a job. | |
