Drawn april 2002

This is one of my first 'realistic' drawings that I considered successful. The main things that I focused on were body proportions and texture of the clothes. I had no idea what kind of person I was drawing until he was almost finished. His clothes seemed typical for a martial arts champion or something, so I added a bandana and wrapped in his feet as a finishing touch.

I agree with the first comment, about his eyes. His whole face in general seems to hold a very warm and compassionate demeanour. Its apparent you spent four hours on him, with the detail of his clothes and hair and everything.
Very good job; like I said before, I really have an appreciation for your realism drawings. Anime is good and all, but this is *great*

He lookes good, and the only thing I'd change is the folds near his armpits. They look odd for some reason, but that's the only thing I can think of to really correct on this picture! Great job!

:-) Lieuwe Boer replies: "You're right, the armpits aren't really correct. I guess I was too lazy to find out how clothing fits there, heh. I'm glad you think he looks good, thanks."

He looks great. You made a good work with his face and clothes, and it looks fabulous!

I love clothes I was accually trying to find some images with penciled robes and I found your pic! So TY!

also do you have any hints to getting the shading on the folds of the rob right?

Thanks
XDragon

:-) Lieuwe Boer replies: "Thank you! I'm always glad to help people out. The key to it is using reference material: photo's, other drawings, the mirror. The clothes of my early drawings were basically directly taken from a variety of reference materials. After a while you'll get to understand how it works, and you'll be able to do it more or less by yourself."

Well! I admire the face on this one, but that wasn't your focus, so I'll do the other parts... I tried to measure, and his head only fits 7 times on his body while 8 is the ideally correct measure... I would make the legs longer, as his upper body seems fine. Hmmm... maybe his feet larger as well... feet have the same length as the lower arm. Texture... I can't tell what fabric the clothes are, but the folds seem fine- but I agree with J-kid about the armpits. Beware of suddenly going lazy- it shows.

:-) Lieuwe Boer replies: "I consider my earliest drawings like this one to be lucky hits. Without any experience I tried over and over until I felt I couldn't make it any better. But, with more experience gained, I can now see what faults I made. And you actually picked all of em out here, though I had never doubted the body length. I actually have some anatomy books that give 1:7 as the correct male proportion, though I'm beginning to question their credibility now. But let's just say that people were shorter in the middle-ages, and that Asians were probably the shortest 2"

I think you really did well with the wrinkles (it's not easy to draw huh?) the pose is relay (the guy doesn't seem too static and the proportions are normal and realistic. I think you answered that already, but did you use a drawing guide book or something? nice work!

:-) Lieuwe Boer replies: "Yeah, in the beginning I relied heavily on anatomy books, to get the proportions and body shape to look right. It's starting to pay off now though, I'm becoming more and more independent 12"

I think his feet are to small. The arms seem a little bit to long. Otherwise he looks fine. Keep practicing! (I wish I was going to follow artclasses soon, but even though it's on my wishing list, no time will let me make it clear for them) Have fun at your artclasses! I'm sure you will draw even better after them!

:-) Lieuwe Boer replies: "Oh, but my artclasses are already finished for months now. Well, the model-drawing part anyway. I see you've only placed comments on two of my older drawings, but I like to think that my latest are a lot better - thanks to the art classes, but mostly because I kept practicing at home. Anyways I thank you for your opbouwende kritiek - it's still greatly appreciated, and also for the nice words!"

I'm glad you came to see my new pictures! And, I'll comment on this one to show you that I'm not the only one who's good at drawing clothes! HAha I guess you did very well with this guy's clothes and the folds look even better than those on my pictures! The female martial artist is the same: very good lookin' You can draw very realistic pictures like these and according to me, that's a very difficult thing to do (realistic pictures).

I think his legs are too short and his arms are too short and skinny but it's really good details. Draw alot more Samurai's there my favorite things anyways I bet a shitload of people like them.

Very nice, I see you understand the physics of the clothing very well. However, the right foot looks shorter than the left one.
