Lieuwe Boer

Lieuwe has been doodling with pen & paper since age 7.

Things to save should my house burn down: My cd's (Guns n' Roses, Van Halen, Malmsteen, etc.), my samurai books, my electric guitar and my replica katana.

So, a bio eh? Well, if you really want to know, here's my story:
It was the year 1989 when I, being seven years old, drew my first cartoon characters. That must have been a very pleasant experience, because in the many years that followed I continued drawing cartoons of every imaginable subject and developed an addiction for all kinds of comic books. So far so good, until I reached age 16, and entered a certain 'phase' that we all know so well, when we lose interest in things we did as a kid and start yelling at our parents. Now I'll admit that I wasn't much of a yeller, but my favourite youth pastime was reduced to scribbling in school agenda's. This age of darkness continued for some years until I could finally see the light again. It was in april 2002 when I made the decision to teach myself how to draw in a 'realistic' way. In the meantime I had developed a healthy(?) dose of interest in fantasy (games, movies, etc.) and as if a divine path had been laid before me, I stumbled upon Elfwood. So here I am.

I'm a student of Japanese language. Becoming a pro artist was once a goal of mine, but lately I've realized that I'm simply not cut out for that stuff and that drawing should best stay a hobby. Though who knows what might happen in the far future?

I found ou through your samurai tour, which was pretty cool. (getting my Asian History Major. ^__^) I had one teeny, tiny nitpick, though: You mention the hamon in the description of one picture, and decribe it as the wavy line showing where the different metals meet. The hamon is actually a temper line, formed (and carefully shaped by the smith) when they heat-treat the cutting edge to make it hard. Check out "The Craft of the Japanese Sword" for more info. It's written by Leon and Hiroko Kapp, with Yoshido Yoshihara. (He's one of the best contemporary swordsmiths in Japan) It's a really cool book.

So, you see, it was a tiny, silly complaint. I hope you aren't offended by the ramblings of a fellow Samurai fanatic.

Your artwork is amazing! I do costume designs, but am unable to draw my character's bodies proportionately. So, obviously I am no where near as good as you! You also seem to be like a very down to earth and polite individual, which is excellent, 'cause I'm from Wisconsin and I don't get to meet very many guys like you. Your also pretty cute, which is always a bonus. I hope to see more of your excellent artwork in the near future! Later!
