This is my first attempt at colored sculpty and i must say that i love the instant gratification of the color and how i can get more (and cleaner looking) detail with it than with paint. i do believe there are amethyst dragons in mythology because when i was a freshmen i had a senior friend named Shannon Byrum (i miss you Shannon! if you are reading this contact me! i have not spoke to you in 4 years!) who told me about different kinds of dragons (not sure what standard she was going by, maybe dungeons and dragons? i dunno, she said that white ones were the stupidest ones of all and would eat their own eggs)
any way her interest in amethyst sparked mine and i began a small collection-- so for this sculpture i took my collection of amethyst and built this dragon. it is small enough to fit in my hand, i spent a lot of time detailing it with glass beads and amethyst pieces, the spines down his neck are all amethyst. as i built him a story began to take form in my mind shaping how he looks, it is a story i may consider making a book about. His name is simply Amethyst and he guards the magic amethyst stones and is willingly chained to his post (the chains are short only for atheistic reasons, they would be longer in the story) i would state in the story how certain stones can enhance any magic users abilities, even some common rocks can do this (see 'Stone Dragon') but amethyst is able to enhance all forms of magic unlike other rocks (like emeralds only enance levitation and flight, sapphire enhances only potions, so on and so forth) these particular amethyst stones are extra powerful and so Amithyst, the dragon born of amethyst scales, guards them from all who wish to use them.

He's gorgeous. I love him. I work with polymer clay too, but I usually paint it; you've done a beautiful job with the colored clays.

I understand completely how you feel about using colored polymer clay intead of painting. Unfortunately the blocks are so small.

Beautiful! I must say, your depictions of dragons closely match mine. And I love what you did with all the different stones on the scales!
