It was generally agreed: they should never have left port at all. A dramatic and very classic scene but with a personal twist; the typical giant octopus is still there (because who doesn’t love overgrown cephalopods?) but it has been reduced to something of a background figure in favour of my own beastie. The overall ship design is based on the (modern) Swedish East Indiaman Götheborg.

Angles are off, perspective is off, size is off, but you know what… I don’t care. I’ve never drawn a ship before so I’m terribly pleased despite the errors. Due to size and complexity of the ship I had to simplify many details since there wasn’t enough space for a lot of the details to be in, for both good and bad. References were used for all this, and a lot of them too.

I would probably go nuts trying to count all the hours spent on this, so I won’t. Close to a hundred anyway I think. Big, big format: 50 by 35 cm (20x14 inches), hence the added close-ups. The size limit was not my friend on this particular piece because I had to reduce to a 50% zoom to get a full view. Mediums used: mechanical pencils, ordinary graphite pencils, gouache and some digital enhancement. Look, maXine, no photo manipulation of the sky this time. :-)

This one is amazing, the look of it is more like ink. I can see why this one is tagged so many times.

:-) Louise Lindgren replies: "Nope... No ink. Just pencils all the way (and a bit of gouache for the foam on the waves). Pencils and a whooooole lot of hours. Anyway... I’m glad you liked it. Thank you. "

This is cool. Perspective might be just a tad off but we can just say the seamonsters have been working on it for some time and the ship’s just about to come apart. Those sailors are so doomed...

:-) Louise Lindgren replies: "Hehe.... Sooooo doomed indeed. They shouldn’t even have left port. I’m glad you liked the drawing. Thank you, Heidi."

Awesome monsters and awesome talent!! I’m in awe, really.

:-) Louise Lindgren replies: "Let’s be honest... monstrous creatures are much more fun than the sugary sweet, right? Glad you liked it. Thank you, Amalie."

PENCIL??????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:-) Louise Lindgren replies: "Yep. All pencils. Well.... and a tiny bit of gouache to highlight some white areas but otherwise all pencils. "

Absolutely an amazing scene! The waves are so realistic and the ship is beautiful, that’s really remarkable!

:-) Louise Lindgren replies: "Thank you, Yoni. Pretty much everything was a real pain in the bum to get right but I can be very patient with things. And still there are loads of details I left out, especially on that ship. "

Fantastic Work

:-) Louise Lindgren replies: "Glad you thought that. Thank you."

Amazing!!! I love the way you’ve done the waves, I find them really hard to draw!!! Great shading 1

:-) Louise Lindgren replies: "Somehow the waves were both fun and difficult to do. I guess you enjoy a challenge every once in a while. A tip is to look at illustrations on waves, not photographs of waves. Water is hard but it gets a little less hard if you study someone’s simplification of it first. "
