SciFi and Fantasy Art Air Battle by Michael A Rasmussen

I wondered one day what a battle between a dragon and a gryphon might look like. So I just got this image in my head and started working it.
One of my motivations was to draw the gryphon. I love gryphons, and I wanted more experience drawing them, so I used this as a way to solidify what I thought my version of the traditional gryphon should look like.

I don't know how the legless dragon got there. I just left the legs out. That's when I decided to make him like a water type dragon. I imagined it inhabiting a lake, and had this image of it swimming to the surface, jumping out of the water and taking flight. *sigh* ^_^
Maybe I'll draw that..... :P

The coloring really scared me. It always does that. I always think I'm going to ruin it, and just freeze. But I finally managed to get it done. The sky was a bit tough, and I had a couple problems with the sunlight on the dragon, but all turned out ok. ^_^
I only used the computer to make it look nice by adjusting brightness and tint and suchlike--no real big changes. I always do that to my pictures--otherwise they look totally drab on screen.

Came out pretty cool, eh? ^_^

4 May 2008	Kimberly A Taylor	Loading... the colouring is actually quite good-there’s a lot of detail with shading and the colurs used- especially on the back end of the gryphon, you can also sense the movement in this pic . i bet on the gryphon winning this fight-all the gryphon needs to do is rip through those delicate wing membranes on the dragon and he’s grounded for sure- feathers are far more robust. Michael A Rasmussen replies: "Aha! More evidence for a mammalian/avian triumph! xD The only disadvantage to shading with colored pencils is that you can’t really get dark without adding black, and that just makes stuff too dark--not much in between. 16 Jul 2008	Maggie Nelson	Loading... Coloring always scares me too. I have a picture of an elf that has been sitting on my desk for months still in need of color. But if you trace your picture onto another piece of paper to keep the original intact, it takes away the fear of ruining it. Your coloring come out really well on this! Michael A Rasmussen replies: "Good to know I’m not alone. I used to do the tracing, but now I think I’ll try scanning and printing. Or maybe I’ll teach myself to color things in a computer. The only reason why the gryphon may win is because water dragons are peaceful creatures and you didn’t draw the legs. lol I really love it though, you did a very good job with the coloring, sometimes I am afraid that I might mess up one of my drawings also. ^^ Michael A Rasmussen replies: "It didn’t look good with legs, so I left them off and made it a water dragon thing.
