Done for Bifrost's Greek Mythology project, this one still has a long way to go, I think. But it's a start, and beyond the compositional stage, inspiration has been short. I couldn't decide on what part of the story to illustrate, so I'll probably do a series eventually. But this is the first, Prometheus giving fire to the humans, with ominous foreshadowing. It represents both physical, spiritual and mental fire. Can anyone pick out the mythical inconsistancy? Pencil and Photoshop

Interesting. Since you asked the question about mythical inconsistancies I was forced to look harder. I see someone dead in the background--I think that's a vulture above the corpse...then I saw the mounds behind the people that appear to be breasts as if the people are standing on a woman's belly (perhaps mother earth?). Very cool....As for the short arm...I am thinking that you meant to foreshorten the arm as if it is bent away. That doesn't bother me too much. I'll look further for the inconsistancies. Very nice!

I like the ominous look to this. But why is his arm so short?

Could the mythical inconsistancy be that the people are standing around an already lit campfire despite the fact that they are being given fire now? Or did prometheus just light it for them?

2 Lisa Coleman replies: "I think he just lit it for them. "

There wasn't any women on earth when Prometheus gave fire to man.

:-) Lisa Coleman replies: "Congratulations! You got it. But it's still a nice picture, and I like to see it as a more universal Promethean spark, than as a precise moment."

Interesting...Just a question--Was I seeing a woman in the earth or was that just a mere coincidence? (I still like the piece- Very nice)

6 Lisa Coleman replies: "Yeah, those are booby hills back there 2 I was drawing it, and figured, what the heck, I'll put in the sky-god/earth-mother fertilization symbolism."

Prometheus is using Zeus's thunderbolt, plus he looks kind of like Zeus...is that the inconsistency you meant?

:-) Lisa Coleman replies: "No. though it is a parallel I noticed. Zeus used fire and lightning for destruction, while Prometheus used it for enlightenment. (Of course, then men went and used it for destruction again.)"

I'm not entirely sure, but didn't Prometheus appear before the humans as a mortal man, so as not to scare them? And later on, wasn't he chained to a rock and had a condor eat his liver daily? Is that him in the background?

People please, art is a form of communication. Are you really going to pick apart a piece like this based on "facts" from centuries old mythology. Let each viewer complete the picture in their own way, so that art will remain a universal language free of such ridiculous critiques.

I can see this photo it is very nicely done. i am doing a school project on Prometheus and i have read his history. would that be zues that is in the clouds? i can see that Prometheus is chained to the rock off to the side but i am wondering is Zeus doing as he said he would if Prometheus brought fire to earth and mankind?
